Columbus has been the surprise of the NHL this season, along with maybe the Minnesota Wild.
Columbus relinquished the division lead to the Washington Capitals this week, and are currently on a small skid after their historic 16-game winning streak that spanned across the entire of December and into the New Year.
Ottawa has been rather consistent throughout the year, with tons of mini winning and losing streaks sprinkled throughout their schedule, but have an overall record that sits them 3rd in the Atlantic Division.
Ottawa Senators
The Senators have performed admirably without their #1 netminder, Craig Anderson, for the majority of the season.
Anderson is away from the team for the foreseeable future to be with his family, as his wife was tragically diagnosed with cancer near the start of the season.
Mike Condon was brought in from Pittsburgh to help shoulder the load, and he has done an incredible job off-setting the loss of Anderson.
Check out the free sports picks from Cappers Picks experts today!
On the season, Condon has a 10-7-3 record with a 2.38 GAA and a .917 SV% in his 21 games played…not bad for the price of just a 5th round pick.
The offense for the Sens has been a balanced attack, though they have not received strong production from high priced winger, Bobby Ryan, who has just 16 points.
Mark Stone leads Sens’ forwards with 32 points, followed closely by top pivot, Kyle Turris, who has 29 points with a team-leading 15 goals.
On the back-end, Erik Karlsson is putting together another great season on the stat sheet, while playing a better all-round game in effort to help the team win before individual stats.
Karlsson has registered the most points for the Senators with his 35, which sits him 3rd in the NHL in defensive scoring.
Columbus
For a team that finished amongst the bottom five in the league a season ago, the Columbus Blue Jackets have really it around in 2016-17.
Many times, this would be due to a franchise-changing talent stepping in, such as a Connor McDavid, but such isn’t the case considering their #3 overall pick, Pierre-Luc Dubois, is still in junior.
Columbus now sits 3rd overall in the NHL this season with 61 points, and earlier tied a league record with a 16-consecutive game win streak from November 29 to January 3rd.
The numbers behind the team look very favorable and it appears that CBJ can continue to be a dominant team this year and into playoffs.
On the year, the Blue Jackets are 3rd in both goals per game (3.3) and goals against (2.2), as well as 1t on the powerplay (26.0%) and 10th on the PK (83.1%).
Leading the way on the scoresheet is Cam Atkinson, who has 41 points overall, include an incredible 21 goals, good for a tie for 3rd overall in the league.
While Seth Jones is representing CBJ at the All-Star game, Atkinson, Nick Foligno and Zach Werenski all could have easily got the call for their strong seasons.

Sergei Bobrovsky has put together a season that is worthy of some Vezina consideration, playing the large bulk of the games for Columbus and sitting the top-five in both GAA and SV%, while leading the league in wins.
On the year, Bobrovsky owns a 2.00 GAA and a .931 SV% with a 26-6-2 record in 34 games played.
NHL Betting Trends:
- The Senators rank 22nd goals per game at 2.5
- Ottawa has a point differential of -2 on the season
- Ottawa is 9-8-0 on the road this year
- Columbus is tied for the best goal differential on the season at +46.
- Columbus is 2-4 since their 16-game winning streak
- Columbus is 16-4-1 at home this year
Free Ottawa Senators vs Columbus Blue Jackets NHL Hockey Prediction:
Columbus has been sputtering as of late since their historic win-streak, but they are still the better team of the two in this game and have home ice advantage.
Bobrovsky has been outstanding this season, and while Mike Condon has been a strong fill-in surprise for Craig Anderson, he hasn’t come close to the year Bobrovsky is having.
The Blue Jackets trump the Sens in every major team stat category, but each time has had a strong showing in goals against. I like a tight-checking, low-scoring game between these two teams and the under to come through.
