SEC 2015-2016 College Football Preview – LSU
Head Coach: Les Miles
LSU Odds to SEC: 20/1
LSU endured many ups and downs in the 2014 season. They had many unanswered questions throughout their campaign and those questions remained unanswered as they get set to begin the 2015 season.
First off, they bring in a new defensive coordinator in Kevin Steele. He’ll have his work cut out for him as LSU featured one of the worst pass rushing defenses in not just the SEC, but in all of college football.
LSU finished with an 8-5 record, but that was capped with just a 4-4 SEC mark and a loss in the Music City Bowl to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 31-28.
LSU had so much inconsistency on both sides of the ball and still don’t have everything figured out.
They’ll look to rely on the maturity and growth of their players to fill in those gaps and get themselves back into the top spot in the SEC.
Les Miles: Listing the head coach as a team strength usually means that team is in serious trouble heading into the season. That however isn’t the case here.
The pure fact of it is that Les Miles is just a phenomenal coach that can make the best of any given situation and he’s proven that throughout his career.
Les Miles has a lot to deal with as far as the positions go. He still has a battle at the QB position he has to figure out and also has a very young, inexperienced defensive line.
Miles will have to pull out all the stops, especially early in the season to get his team on track.
QB Questions: 2014 was supposed to be a year to figure out the best QB going forward following the Zach Mettenberger Era.
However, that didn’t come about has both QBs split a majority of the time and neither one really gained much traction.
Anthony Jennings and Brandon Harris split the snaps all spring and it is still unclear who will get the clear cut #1 spot on the depth chart. However, Miles has hinted that Jennings has a small edge over Harris.
That doesn’t hold much hope though as Jennings completed just 49 percent of his 2014 pass attempts.
WR Questions: Like the QB position, the Tigers’ receiving core has a lot of questions. They really didn’t get much of a look at these guys in 2014 as LSU became a dominant run first team with both QBs struggling to throw down field.
Travin Dural was the lone bright spot for the receiving core as he had 37 receptions, which blew everybody else out of the water.
Getting these guys involved early in the season is crucial as they are still so unproven due to lack of experience.
2015 LSU Prediction: 8-4
LSU has plenty of talent within their roster, that’s a given. It’s up to Les Miles and the coaching staff to start making solidifying moves in terms of the depth chart though.
Splitting snaps within his QBs resulted in a struggle filled SEC portion of the 2014 schedule for LSU and led them to a spot in the Music City Bowl.
Developing a clear cut #1 in the QB spot is the most important, followed by getting a passing game going.
Their struggles throwing the ball allowed teams to really stack the box on them and blitz extra guys. If Miles can get the offense throwing down field, look out. LSU could be a threat near the top of SEC once again.
