Tar Heels vs. Bears Gameday
Coming into the season this trip was supposed to be an easy win for North Carolina, not an expected loss leading to a coaching change.
Yet, that is where we are as North Carolina is deeply questioning its commitment to Bill Belichick and vice versa.
For their part, Cal has been more competitive than expected, and with a young signal caller, might be on an upward trend.
If you are turning in for this one, though, it is likely because you enjoy watching car wrecks.
North Carolina Tar Heels
If you are reading the stuff coming out of Chapel Hill, it doesn’t look good. You want to think there is some pride (and some talent), but there might not be much of either.
The lone positive appears to be the fact that they are off a bye week this week, though that only helps if a program is functional.
Against Power 4 opponents the Tar Heels have looked plain overmatched. The talent is weak and the schemes have not done much since the very first drive of the season.

North Carolina Tar Heel Stats
The offense has struggled significantly, ranking near the bottom nationally in several key categories.
The Tar Heels are averaging just 18.8 points per game, putting them at 118th out of 136 FBS teams, and their total offense is only generating an average of 263.8 yards per game.
On the ground, running back Demon June is the leading rusher, accounting for 266 yards on 38 carries, averaging a solid 7.0 yards per attempt, while receiver Jordan Shipp is the top pass-catcher with 234 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, North Carolina has allowed opponents to score an average of 25.8 points per game.
The defense has been particularly vulnerable against the pass, allowing opponents to complete a high percentage of passes (70.3% completion rate) and surrender 246.2 passing yards per game.
Linebacker Andrew Simpson has been a standout on defense, leading the team with 29 tackles and 2.0 sacks, while defensive back Kaleb Cost has recorded the team’s only interception.
Cal Golden Bears
Cal has some interesting results this season. They did not look good in their last game against Duke but they have three P4 wins, or three more than UNC.
The key has been freshman QB Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele. He just has to limit the turnovers – he has six interceptions in their last three games.
He is giving them a very functional offense which has been a challenge throughout the Justin Wilcox era at Cal.
Assuming Wilcox can keep the defense competitive, Cal is a program that can continue to surprise in the ACC this season.
Cal Golden Bears Stats
In their first season as a member of the ACC, the Bears have been a respectable 4−2 overall record with a 1−1 conference mark through the first six games.
The team averaging 24.2 points per game thanks to an offense that has leaned heavily on the passing game, averaging 255.0 yards per contest.
Quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele has accumulated 1,487 passing yards with nine touchdowns, though he has also thrown seven interceptions.
On the ground, running back Kendrick Raphael leads the team with 414 rushing yards and four touchdowns, averaging 4.5 yards per carry.
The passing game is spread among several targets, with receiver Trond Grizzell being the leading receiver with 400 yards on 24 catches, and tight end Mason Mini scoring a team-high three receiving touchdowns.
Defensively, the Golden Bears are holding opponents to 22.5 points per game and 329.8 total yards per contest.
The defense has been particularly solid against the run, limiting opponents to 123.0 rushing yards per game and a 4.1 yards per rush average.

The defensive secondary has been prone to allowing a high completion percentage, though they have been opportunistic in generating turnovers. Defensive back Hezekiah Masses is tied for the national lead in interceptions with four.
Despite the low number of sacks on the season, the defense’s ability to limit opponent scoring and generating key turnovers has been a crucial factor in the Golden Bears’ winning record through the first half of the 2025 campaign.

Getting away from home might be helpful for UNC, but traveling across the country? I think it is hard for them to get going.
The offense just isn’t there and I would expect lots of bettors are putting this game into their teasers given that we are on the key number right now.
I do think there will be effort though so look for a game where the offense just struggle to get going.
Alternately, perhaps Cal dominates this flagging UNC team and wins something like 34-10. That would do it too.
