Wiseman History
Wiseman eventually decided to just leave Memphis, hire an agent and get ready for the NBA Draft.
In his three games at Memphis he looked good, averaging 19.7 points, 10.7 rebounds and shooting over 76 percent from the field. It will be an awfully small sample size for NBA scouts to go on, though.
Even in high school, Wiseman didn’t transfer to a prep school before taking the leap to college. Instead, he stayed at Memphis East, where he won just about every major award he could have.
James Wiseman 2020 NBA Draft First Overall Pick Betting Odds: +250
Looking ahead to the NBA Draft, Wiseman is second on the board of favorites to go number one overall at +250, just behind Anthony Edwards of Georgia.
Wiseman is by far the biggest player on the board of potential top choices. He has sprouted all the way to 7’1” with a wingspan nearly another half-foot longer. He’ll be 19 and some months on (scheduled) draft night, making him slightly older than Edwards and LaMelo Ball but not enough to likely make any difference in the eyes of league front offices.
Like so many top prospects who come into the NBA at such a young age, Wiseman is primarily a scorer and his offensive skill set is considered to be what makes him such a promising young player.
He doesn’t have three-point range yet but you can see it developing. He does have a mid-range jumper and can put it on the deck for one or two dribbles and get all the way to the basket. He’s a lefty who looks a little like Marvin Bagley, who starred for Duke a couple seasons ago before going second overall to the Sacramento Kings in the draft.
That left-handedness and wingspan make him an intriguing defensive prospect as well. Being a player from the youngest generation and a big man makes him an alluring asset because he boasts the size that every team still needs with a skill set and familiarity with playing the modern game. He is not a back-to-the-basket scorer.
That sort of game could mesh well in Golden State, which of course has the best chance to get the number one pick. He could share minutes with Kevon Looney, adding some size next to Draymond Green and not disrupt too much on the perimeter like someone like Ball would.
Actually, there are only a couple of teams that would likely be against taking a center with the first overall pick — Minnesota, which already has Karl-Anthony Towns, and perhaps Atlanta with Clint Capela. Detroit may also think twice with Blake Griffin signed on.
Otherwise, Golden State (14%) and Cleveland (14%) are prime landing spots. Detroit (10.5%) didn’t mind pairing Griffin with Andre Drummond and could certainly still be an option. New York (9%), Charlotte (6%) and Washington (4.5%) would also have to be interested.
Given the opportunity to triple your money at the price of +200, Wiseman is a pre-lottery buy in the market for the top overall selection.
