The 3-point contest doesn’t have the same illustrious history as the Slam Dunk Contest (with apologies to Larry Bird and Craig Hodges). What’s more, in the modern NBA, where the long ball is king and stars avoid the Dunk Contest, this is the show that often steals the spotlight at All-Star Saturday night.

So far, out of all the events taking place at this year’s All-Star, this feels like the contest that could come down to a favorite and a heavy underdog as last men standing.

Damian Lillard, Portland Trail Blazers: +425
Even as the favorite, +425 feels like an undersell to one of the NBA’s best shooters on one of the league’s hottest individual streaks.
Lillard is averaging 36.1 points per game in February, shooting 37.6 percent from deep on 4.4 makes per game. However, that three-point percentage undersells how dangerous he’s been, going 8-of-14 and 6-of-13 from deep in recent games against the Lakers and Thunder.
Just One Question…
The only question for Lillard is: Is the three-point contest line too damn close!? The 6’2″ guard has a propensity for pulling up from 30-plus feet, and it almost seems like he’s more comfortable the further away he gets.
That said, I have a feeling he’ll look just as calm, cool and, obviously, collected at every rack Saturday night as he’s been all year.

2023 3-Point Contest Odds: The Dark Horse
Lauri Markkanen, Utah Jazz: +650
Lauri Markkanen is the epitome of your modern-day big. That’s to say he’s 7-feet tall, shooting a top-20 three-point percentage across the league and making—I say making—the ninth-most deep balls out of anyone in the NBA.
Hometown Hero
In this case, the modern-day big is also the hometown favorite hoping to shoot the lights out of his own arena in Salt Lake City, Utah.
His style, which is largely set shots off the catch with space to launch, bodes well for this contest.
2023 NBA 3-Point Contest Free Picks In this case, Markkanen is more than just a fun play at +650. He might be the smart play.
2023 3-Point Contest Odds: The Field
- Overall, Jayson Tatum, of the Boston Celtics has the best odds: +500
- Tyler Herro, Miami Heat: +550
- Kevin Huerter, Sacramento Kings: +550
- Also, Tyrese Haliburton, Sacramento Kings: +600
- Julius Randle, New York Knicks: +700
Jayson Tatum is a fun second-favorite at +500. For one thing, if you’ve watched him play this season, you know his long ball is only part of why he’s an MVP candidate, but it’s also becoming a more regular staple in his game.
Tyler Herro hasn’t captivated audiences this season the way he did early in his career and in his Sixth Man of the Year chase, but he’s launching 8.1 triples per game at a 36.9 percent clip, and he may be one of the streakier shooters of the bunch.
Kevin Huerter and Tyrese Haliburton among others in Sacramento have the Kings looking seriously rejuvenated. In reality, can these Kings pump some life into the three-point contest?
The Replacement
Julius Randle’s inclusion comes at the expense of a top long-ball specialist, Portland Trail Blazers Anfernee Simons. So far, it’s obvious Randle is a long-shot for a reason.
Then again, he’s also hit eight three-pointers in a game twice this season. So, the league has confidence he can put on a show.

To start, Lauri Markkanen at +650 is just too delicious.
To sum up, this isn’t a wild-card, underdog, high-reward pick for the hell of it. On the positive side, it’s one that comes with much less risk than you might expect—and he’s someone who will have a unique home-court advantage during All-Star Saturday Night.

Full Disclosure: At this point, I’m probably betting on Lillard to win this, too. I know, I know…classic hedge. But at both their odds, I can’t look away.
To that end, The Favorite vs. The Underdog is a real possibility in the 2023 NBA 3-Point Contest.
