There’s no denying the AT&T NBA Slam Dunk Contest isn’t what it used to be. In fact, casuals may not even know the four high-flying phenoms named to 2023’s edition of the mid-season slamfest.

Also, the following players may not be the household names we wanted, but one underdog has a real chance to shine brighter than the rest Saturday night.

Indeed, out of the three NBA players participating in the Dunk Contest, Jericho Sims has tallied the fewest dunks on the year at 59.
But guess what? That’s still good enough for 33rd league-wide. And, it’s with him having played just 745 total minutes on the year.

Only one other player in the top 33 has played under 1,000 minutes (Thomas Bryant).
Furthermore, when Sims sees the floor, he sees the rim with tunnel vision. That’s a problem for opposing bigs considering Sims himself is 6’9” and a built-250 pounds.
Apparently, Sims is already showing off his vertical on the socials. That’s probably a good thing, because as impressive as his in-season numbers are, we all know a center can look less impressive flying through the air by himself on All-Star Saturday Night.

Among the four contests on Saturday night, no one has more total dunks than Kenyon Martin, Jr.
In fact, K-Mart Jr.’s 122 dunks are good enough for seventh in the league, and he’s a wide margin ahead of the next player at his position (Lauri Markkanen at 14th with 87).
Entertainment Factor
Additionally, if you’ve watched Martin play much, you know he’s been one of the league’s premier posterizing rookies alongside Portland’s Shaedon Sharpe. He’s also become, arguably, the most entertaining player to watch on the young, growing Houston Rockets.
Most important, you know Martin Jr. is making Martin Sr. proud, since K-Mart the Elder was quite the slam artist himself.

So far, at 6’8” playing the 2-guard position, Trey Murphy has earned a reputation as a floor-spacing shooter. However, his 62 dunks on the year are why he’s here, and they’ve provided some serious highlights for Pelicans fans despite watching Zion in street clothes.
However, many like to note that Murphy didn’t start dunking until his senior year of high school. I guess I’m noting it here, too. With that in mind, it’s important to note that Murphy has always flown under the radar.

Without a doubt, Trey Murphy at +320 is great value.
That is to say, the Dunk Contest is always a bit of a crapshoot when there’s no heavy favorite or significant fan favorite in the field. This year is exactly that scenario, and Murphy, who is being criminally under-covered among contestants, has a chance to continue proving people wrong.
Moreover, unless Mac McClung blows everyone away with his 6’2” frame, it will come down to three players with similar heights, taking away the edge of a small over a big.
