After two races at Silverstone, Formula 1 heads back to Barcelona. The only circuit the cars all ran at before the sport went into lockdown in the spring. So, how will this go? A Spanish Grand Prix in August will see temperatures soar. Which means, just as at Silverstone in the previous two races, tires will be the deciding factor. As late punctures and tire wear cost favored Team Mercedes the top spot in the 70th Anniversary GP.
Here is a look at Bovada’s betting odds to win both this week’s race and the 2020 Formula One Championship title.
Lewis Hamilton: 2020 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix Odds: 8/13
Lewis Hamilton continues to lead the classification and to be the favourite for the title, but both Lewis Hamilton and teammate, Valtteri Bottas, had to face a rumour that is going around: That FI is looking for a change in the regulations in order to limit Mercedes for 2021.
Neither the world championship leader nor his team-mate have addressed the issue, the question remains, does this push Hamilton even harder to secure the championship this year, or does it demoralize him?
Certainly Hamilton remains firmly in control of the Drivers’ World Championship and he departed the U.K for Spain with a 30-point lead in the standings, albeit with Verstappen having leapfrogged Valtteri Bottas to become his closest pursuer.
Lewis Hamilton is seeking a fourth consecutive victory in Barcelona and fifth in all, while this venue was also the scene of Max Verstappen’s first ever F1 success.
Valtteri Bottas: 2020 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix Odds: 7/2
On third position, Valtteri Bottas started the season with a win but has since lost some momentum. That of course does not mean this talented Team Mercedes driver can be counted out.
But considering the track temperature and tire issues, Bottas is unlikely to push for the checkered flag. He’s in good position for a podium position and that will suit him fine.
Max Verstappen: 2020 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix Odds: 4/1
Dutch driver Max Verstappen won the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix at Silverstone, and that victory, together with other outstanding results, have moved him up to second overall position.
Now Team Red Bull and the young talented driver have rolled up their sleeves, placing themselves in between the silver arrows (Hamilton and Bottas).
Arriving in Barcelona as the winner of the last event will surely provide Verstappen with extra motivation. And the Red Bull driver cannot deny that he has a special bond with the circuit, where he won his first victory at the tender age of 18.
At Silverstone Verstappen was alone among the top 10 on the grid to start on hard tires and it paid off. So likely we’ll see him try the same strategy in Barcelona, however he will probably not be alone in that choice.
Charles Leclerc: 2020 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix Odds: 50/1
After Team Mercedes and Team Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren and Racing Point are leading the rest of the mortals. The thrill of the season will thus be shared by these teams.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was fourth, ahead of Red Bull’s Alexander Albon at the 70th Anniversary F1 Grand Prix, a result he himself expressed surprise at. Will he surprise himself with another fourth place finish? Unlikely.
Lando Norris: 2020 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix Odds: 100/1
In a field of very young drivers at twenty Lando Norris is still the baby of the bunch. and Driving for McLaren he finished on the podium for third place at the 70th Anniversary F1 Grand Prix.
This comes after a season opener third place finish at the Austrian Grand Prix and Norris has proven already he is a strong driver. The young Brit could definitely be a contender for the podium at Barcelona.
