The Louisville Cardinals are hoping that a trip to the sandy beaches of Maui are good for what ails them as they’ve been one of the biggest stories of this college basketball season with an 0-3 start. Granted the Cardinals had a down year last season at 12-18, but they’ve been favored at home in all three defeats this year.
We didn’t know Louisville was going to be this bad to start 2022/23, but we also weren’t sure if the Razorbacks were going to be this good heading into the Cardinals vs Arkansas meeting. The Hogs lost a lot of key pieces from last year’s 24-7 regular season team that made it to the Elite 8 before losing to Duke.
Louisville Cardinals
Louisville has experience starting two seniors and a redshirt junior, but so far that hasn’t equated to wins. The Cardinals have lost 67-66 to Bellarmine, 73-72 to Wright State, and 61-60 to Appalachian State.
A few bounces in some different directions and Louisville could easily be 3-0 as their total margin of defeat is just three points this season. But at the same time the Cardinals were at home and at least a five point favorite in each game so they shouldn’t have been that close to begin with.
Despite the 0-3 start one of the bright spots for Kenny Payne’s team has been Senior El Ellis. He’s scored 29 points in each of the last two games and is averaging 24.0 on the year but once again – those have all been losses.
Louisville does have four players averaging in double figures on this young season, but Arkansas’ defense is stifling allowing just 54.0 ppg – although some of that could be because of the competition they’ve played.
Arkansas Razorbacks
Arkansas’ quest for the Final 4 ended with a 78-69 defeat to Duke in the Elite 8 in what ended up being Mike Krzyzewski’s final collegiate win. What that success has done though is allow Arkansas not to rebuild, but reload.
The Hogs had a lot of offseason questions after JD Notae (18.9 ppg) and Stanley Umude (11.7 ppg) used up their eligibility while Jaylin Williams (10.8 ppg) and Au’Diese Toney (10.4 ppg) took their journeys to the NBA.
Davonte Davis (8.5 ppg) was Arkansas’ leading returning scorer until they signed Ricky Council IV from Wichita State and Trevon Brazile from Missouri. That duo has combined to average 32.7 ppg so far this season so Arkansas looks like they’ll be just fine.
Arkansas freshman Jordan Walsh was named to the Julius Erving watch list and fellow newcomer Anthony Black has made his way into the starting lineup. The Razorbacks have another freshman, Nick Smith, Jr., who was named to the Jerry West watch list although he has yet to play this season as he recovers from a knee injury.

Free Louisville Cardinals vs. Arkansas Razorbacks NCAAB Prediction:
Arkansas has shown some pretty good defensive prowess this season, but at the same time – despite their winless start – Louisville has to have a better offense than North Dakota State, Fordham, or even South Dakota State.
4* Free CBB Betting Pick: Over 140
It’s always tough taking the ‘over’ in neutral site games, but just as easy as the shots aren’t falling on a neutral site defense can be a bit relaxed on a trip to Maui. The Hogs are putting up 70+ per game, and now it’s time for Louisville to join them in the Cardinals vs. Arkansas matchup.
