The sixth Signature Event of the season begins Thursday with Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina hosting the Wells Fargo Championship. This event precedes the season’s second major tournament, with the PGA Championship being played at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky next week.

This event doesn’t have a cut at the 36-hole mark, so all players in the field will have 70 holes to put their best foot forward and potentially earn a spot in next week’s PGA Championship.

This Week on the PGA Tour

Scottie Scheffler’s return will wait at least one more week as the world’s top player’s record run remains on pause. Scheffler has four victories and a runner-up finish in his past five PGA Tour starts. Expect him to be back in the field next week at the PGA, giving him a three-week break since his win at the RBC Heritage on April 22.

Scheffler is the only eligible player not scheduled to participate this week in a loaded 70-player field. Atop the betting board is Rory McIlroy, who looks for his fourth win here. Not far behind him is Wyndham Clark, who’ll be defending his first title.

McIlroy’s had plenty of success here, and enters this week with plenty of momentum. A couple weeks ago he paired up with Shane Lowry to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans for his 25th career PGA Tour victory. This is the only event on Tour that McIlroy’s won three times.

2024 Wells Fargo Championship Free Picks & Golf Betting Odds: Ludvig Aberg +1200

It just doesn’t sound right because he’s been in contention just about every time out, but the Swede is still in search of his first win of 2024. The last time he won on the PGA Tour was on a Bermuda-based Tom Fazio designed course at the 2023 RSM Classic, which bodes well for his Wells Fargo Championship debut.

While we like to see a strong course history when backing favorites, Aberg has been a first timer each week we’ve seen him since he entered the scene in June 2023. He was making his first appearance at Augusta National a couple starts ago when he finished runner-up there.

2024 Wells Fargo Championship Free Picks & Golf Betting Odds: Justin Thomas +3000

Thomas is coming off a fifth-place finish at the RBC Heritage where he gained strokes in all four major categories which really makes it hard to ignore the way his game’s improved of late. Particularly notable was his improved play with the flat stick.

If he can continue to play better on the greens, that could be what gets him back into the winners’ circle – and he won here back in 2017 when Quail Hollow hosted the PGA Championship. He also has four top-30 finishes in five starts at the Wells Fargo.

Finau’s another player whose game’s been improving of late, and he’s done it at places that have the most in common with Quail Hollow. His two best showings this year were Torrey Pines and Memorial Park, where he was runner-up.

He’s performed best on longer courses that aren’t as harsh for missing fairways and reward strong long iron play. He’s coming off a 12th place finish at the RBC Heritage, and now has a chance to get more value from his play off the tee.

Young still doesn’t have a win on Tour, but that break through is surely coming soon. And Quail Hollow suits him well. Young is second on Tour in total driving and 18th in shots gained: tee-to-green. He’s the right kind of aggressive to take advantage of scoring opportunities this week.
