2024 PGA Tour – BMW Championship Preview & Picks

It’s time for the latest edition of the 2024 BMW Championship PGA Tourney, and that means it’s time for some PGA Tour free picks. The FedEx Cup Playoffs continue this week with the BMW Championship at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colorado. This marks the BMW Championship’s first return to the Denver area since 2014. With the course played at elevation and an average altitude of 6,200 feet, the course will be the longest in PGA Tour history at 8,130 yards. The ball should fly off the tee which may give some of the Tour’s long bombers an edge.

The sixth Signature Event of the season begins Thursday with Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina hosting the BMW Championship. This event precedes the season’s second major tournament, with the PGA Championship being played at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky next week.

This event doesn’t have a cut at the 36-hole mark, so all players in the field will have 70 holes to put their best foot forward and potentially earn a spot in next week’s PGA Championship.

This Week on the PGA Tour

The top 50 players qualified for the field this weekend, down from the usual rules which brought the top 70 here. There will be no cut, so all 50 players will see the weekend. The players will be vying for a position in the top 30 of the FedEx Cup standings to make it through to next weekend’s Tour Championship event.

Viktor Hovland was the winner of this event last year, and that helped propel him to the 2023 FedEx Cup title the following week. He isn’t in great form this season, but a turnaround here would be quite a story.

With no previous Tour events played on this course we’re short on course history as a guide, but we do have a slew of past winners of this event in the field alongside Hovland. Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas, Keegan Bradley, Jason Day, Billy Horschel, and Rory McIlroy are all past winners.

2024 BMW Championship Free Picks & Golf Betting Odds: Scottie Scheffler +320

Scheffler’s spectacular season is well documented. He’s seen Xander Schauffele join him in the white hot category, but Scheffler’s the player we’re looking at this week. Shorter odds than we’d like to see, but in a short 50-man field Scheffler will surely be in the hunt throughout the weekend.

Scheffler wasn’t at his best in Memphis, but oddsmakers still pegged him as second in the field to win entering Sunday. This week’s course comparables are Augusta National and Muirfield Village, so Scheffler’s as big a threat as ever to add another win to his impressive season.

2024 BMW Championship Free Picks & Golf Betting Odds: Rory McIlroy +1000

McIlroy hasn’t had a great year but he always turns it on in the playoffs. He’ll be happy to get to play a course that’s over 8,000 yards with the edge of playing at elevation. His T68 in Memphis is a result he’d surely like to put way behind him and he’ll have a chance to right the ship in short order.

2024 BMW Championship Free Picks & Golf Betting Odds: Aaron Rai +4000

Rai doesn’t have the same juice off the tee as many of the other top players on Tour, but he makes up for that with his incredible driving accuracy, an area where the 29-year-old ranks first on Tour. His ball striking has also put him third in greens in regulation and sixth in strokes gained: approach to green.

Rai’s finished T16 or better in five of his last six Tour starts, even winning the Wyndham Championship. If his putter is working, he should be a fixture on the leaderboard this weekend.

2024 BMW Championship Free Picks & Golf Betting Odds: Robert MacIntyre +5500

It took MacIntyre a while to get going, but he’s turned it on recently and even captured his first PGA Tour title with a win at the RBC Canadian Open, then added another victory in his home nation with a victory at the Genesis Scottish Open.

MacIntyre was T7 last week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, propelling him up to 12th in the FedEx Cup standings. Expect him to be in the hunt for his third victory of the season this week.
