The PGA pros head to Las Vegas this week to play the 2016 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at TPC Summerlin – a par 71, 7,255 yard track that will host a slightly below average field of 132. Tee shots aren’t necessarily the determining factor on this track – you don’t have to be all that long or accurate to score here.
This event is known as a bit of a birdie-bonanza however – the average winning score is right around 22-under par.
It is rare but there aren’t any glaring statistical categories that will give golfers an edge this week – a strong all-around game and getting hot at the right moment will likely create the victor this week.
So with that in mind who should we keep an extra eye on this week? Let’s break it down.
2016 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open Favorites:
Ryan Moore +1200
Home town guy always seems to bring his best in Vegas – he won this event in 2012 and was T9 in 2013.
He was good at the recent Ryder Cup and has been inside the top 25 in his last three events – T2 at the Tour Championship a month ago and a T23 after an ugly 75 on Sunday at the WGC-HSBC included.
Moore’s track history and present form make him the obvious favorite this week – not sure about the price though.
Brooks Koepka +1600
Koepka is always a Vegas darling and in this watered-down field he has a real chance to kick his season off in style. He can mash the ball and has a terrific all-around game.
2016 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open Contenders:
Jon Rahm +2500
Newly turned pro has not looked out of place – he’s made 7 of 8 cuts with a T2, a T3 and three other top 25s sprinkled in there. Rahm is a name you are going to see a lot- get used to it!
Chris Kirk +2800
Shared the 54 hole leas at Sanderson Farms only to finish a respectable T2. He also posted a T10 at the BMW Championship and had a T8 before that. With three straight top 10s on TOUR Kirk is the hottest player in the field.
His track history isn’t great here – T36 finishes in two appearances but there is no denying his present ability to go low and drain a ton of putts!
Scott Piercy +2800
Local guy has three top 10s and another two top 25s in this tournament in the last six years.
He enters off a disappointing effort at the WGC-HSBC but before that had a T3 at the Safeway Open and a T10 at the CIMB Classic. Piercy loves the shootouts and is a decent bet to be in the mix during this home-game.
Brendan Steele +3500
Is on the radar thanks to his win at the Safeway Open – a result he followed with a ho-hum T26 in Malaysia. Steele has a knack of hitting long and finding greens.
He has placed top 25 in this event five straight years with a scoring average in the 60s. Something has to give for this talented guy – my guess is that he shows up on leaderboards this week.
Tony Finau +3500
Finau is one of the bombers that could have success this week. He finished T7 on this track in 2014 and was T16 last year.
He has been inside the top 35 in both events so far in the new season and returns to arguably his favorite track this week.
His weakness is accuracy off the tee – that shouldn’t be much of an issue on this particular track.
William Mcgirt +4500
Tees it up for the first time since a respectable T17 at the Tour Championship. He put his name on the radar last year with a win at the Memorial Tournament on a similar-type track to Summerlin.
He finished T8 on in this event last year – he had a closing-round 62 which demonstrates his affinity for this course. His accuracy and short game make him a contender – his confidence on this track give him a real shot!
2016 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open Sleepers (+5000 or higher):
Kevin Streelman +5500
Enters off a T18 at Sanderson Farms – he led until half-way through the final round en route to a T18.
He has finished inside the top 22 in his last five editions of this tournament including a runner-up finish in 2014 and arrives in decent form for another crack at a course that obviously fits his eye.
Ryo Ishikawa +7000
Finished T2 in his debut here in 2013 and arrives in seriously terrific form – five consecutive top 10s including a win in Japan and a T10 at the CIMB.
His last top 10 on U.S. soil came at the 2015 Quicken Loans National – I’m expecting another big week for Ryo as he gets his name back on the radar.
2016 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open Picks:
This week I am sticking with the favorite and class of the field. Ryan Moore at +1200 is the pick. He always saves his best for this home town events – my guess is that he does so again.
The Sleeper is Ryo Ishikawa at +7000. He has been on fire – time it translates on North American soil!
