Six of the world’s top 10 golfers will give it a go in this unique and notoriously tough-to-figure-out tournament.
With that in mind, who should we keep our eye on this week? Let’s take a look.
2016 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro – Am Favorites:
JORDAN SPIETH 5/1
The #1 player on the planet hasn’t done anything to suggest he won’t be a huge threat as always this week. He won the Tournament of Champions by eight strokes on January 7th, finished tied for 5th at the Abu Dhabi Golf championship on January 21st and finished 2nd at the Singapore Open on January 28th. In three starts on this track he’s never missed out on the top 25, and he tied for seventh last year and a T4 the year before. Spieth is simply sensational and should be in the mix again this week.
JASON DAY 8/1
Somehow missed the cut at the Farmers – he had the flu so we can give him a pass! Before that MC he was inside the top 12 in every event since June! He has made the cut here all six times he’s played including a T4 last year – T6 or better three times already in this tournament. His main rival Mr. Spieth should be able to bring the best out in Day this week – expect a good tournament for the World #2.
DUSTIN JOHNSON 11/1
Has historically done very well at this event – wins in 2009 and 2010 being the best results to go along with four other top 10s here – a T4 last year and a T2 in 2014 included. So far this season he has a T10 and a T18 so his form is decent ahead of this week.
Future father-in-law Wayne Gretzky will be playing beside DJ this week – expect him to play well on arguably his favorite track on the planet.
2016 AT&T PGA Pebble Beach National Pro – Am Contenders:
BRANDT SNEDEKER 14/1
Defending champion in this event has been sizzling on TOUR – he also won this event in 2013. He has had one bad round the last six weeks – that resulted in a T33 at the Waste Management last week – otherwise he’s been terrific – winning the Farmers two weeks and finishing T3 and second in a pair of events in Hawaii. Present form and track history point to yet another strong week for Sneds – expect him to be heard from again this week.
JIMMY WALKER 18/1
2014 winner here has four top 10s at this event. Walker always starts the season strong – this year is no different – a T10-T13-T4 start to the year has him on the radar this week as well. He has been inside the top 25 every year here since 2011 and was top 10 four straight years before a T21 finish last year. Walker should have won in San Diego a few weeks ago and should be motivated this week for a strong finish.
PHIL MICKELSON 22/1
Has won this event four times and enters this week in pretty good form – off a T11 at the Waste Management that featured a bogey-free 65 in third round. He somehow missed the cut in the event before that however but also finished T3 at the CareerBuilder Challenge. Mickelson has showed signs of promise lately but continues to be one of the more difficult guys on TOUR to figure out. If you wanna take a shot go ahead – I certainly am not!
J.B HOLMES 33/1
Has found a new level to his game – consecutive T6s ahead of this week – at TPC Scottsdale and at San Diego. He has four top 20s in nine appearances at this event including at T2 in 2010 and a T10 last year. Holmes hasn’t been out of the top 25 since September and looks as solid as he has in his career. It takes a special type of golfer to succeed in this format – Holmes may be that guy.
SHANE LOWRY 40/1
Finished a respectable T6 at the WMPO and had a T13 at the Farmers – in good form heading into this week. His game is in terrific form right now – he has seriously contended in both of his last two starts overall. His T21 in his debut in this event last year is further reason to have faith in Lowry this week.
2016 AT&T PGA Pebble Beach National Pro – Am Sleepers (50/1 or higher):
DANNY LEE 66/1
Stumbled in his final round in Phoenix en route to a T4 – he looked awfully impressive through three rounds of that tournament. He has been a factor more times than not the last year and at 66/1 could offer a good payday.
FREDDIE JACOBSON 80/1
Was last seen finishing T4 at Torrey Pines and now has three top 20 finishes world-wide since October. He finishes T7 in this event in 2013 and could surprise this week.
NICK WATNEY 125/1
Worth a mention at very least because he finished second here last year. He has not won on TOUR since 2012 but at 125/1 could be worth a look.
PAT PEREZ 125/1
Is another super-sleeper worth a mention – Pebble Beach always brings the best out in this guy. He has finished inside the top 10 in his last two starts here (T4 and T7) and was second in this event in 2002. Track history has be a believer this week.
2016 AT&T PGA Pebble Beach National Pro – Am Picks:
The pick this week is Jimmy Walker at 18/1. The 2014 winner has always played well here; he thrives at the beginning of each season and may get a little karma pay-back after the debacle at Torrey Pines.
The AT&T PGA Pebble Beach Sleeper is Pat Perez at 125/1 – great odds for a guy who always shows up at this event.
