A possible Stanley Cup finals preview goes down on Thursday evening when the Lightning and Stars tangle at American Airlines Center in Dallas. The Stars are tops in the West and Tampa is pushing for the number one spot in the Atlantic Division and two seed in the East.
Tampa Bay Lightning
The Lightning came into the season as an odds-on favourite to be the toast of the Eastern Conference. Some injuries to key players like Tyler Johnson and Ondrej Palat have slowed them down, but they are a healthy team now and are starting to make their push towards the post-season.
Tampa is a scary good team when healthy as they boast depth in spades up front and a very competent back end that is anchored by a pair of Swedes in Viktor Hedman and Anton Stralman. The “triplets” line of Johnson, Palat and Nikita Kucherov has been split for the time being as the injuries seemed to throw off the chemistry that saw them dominate last year in the regular season and playoffs.
It’s a nice luxury for coach John Cooper to have though that he can just play Kucherov with Steven Stamkos and Alex Killorn, while keeping Palat and Johnson together to play alongside another young talent in Vladislav Namestnikov.
Ben Bishop has been rock solid in goal again for this team and will be in the Vezina Trophy conversation.
Dallas Stars
Dallas is doing this year what everyone expected them to do last season when they loaded up with players like Jason Spezza, Ales Hemsky, Patrick Eaves, among others. The team has found chemistry now with their new players and find themselves atop the Western Conference.
This team is built very much like Tampa, with a lot of speed and skill up front, and are anchored by a Swedish d-man by the name of John Klingberg, who has racked up 53 points so far in just his second season in the NHL.
The Stars still have some question marks defensively as they have given up 203 goals (Tampa has given up 163), but the Stars can score in bunches and outscore their defensive deficiencies on most nights and are the NHL’s highest scoring team at 227 goals.
