2026 NHL Handicapping – Calgary Flames vs Edmonton Oilers
Here’s why I’m backing an UNDER bet below in my Flames Oilers free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Flames vs. Oilers Gameday
The Calgary Flames visit the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at Rogers Place. Puck drop is 8:30 p.m. ET on Sportsnet. Calgary enters at 5-6-0, while Edmonton sits at 8-2-2.
Ryan Huska’s Flames have won four straight and five of their past six. That’s quite a turnaround after opening the season with five consecutive losses.
Calgary finally has something to smile about.
Calgary arrives with the momentum, while Edmonton has some unfinished business after two ugly home results.
Mike Babcock’s Oilers have dropped two straight, although their strong start has kept them near the top of the Pacific Division. The pressure is on Edmonton to respond.
A rivalry game should get everybody’s attention.
Calgary is only 1-3-0 away from home. The Flames have looked much better lately, but proving it on the road is another matter.
This is the first regular-season Battle of Alberta in 2026-27. There’s enough bad blood between these clubs without needing any extra motivation.

Calgary Flames vs. Edmonton Oilers Odds & Previous Games
Edmonton opened at -209 on the moneyline, with Calgary at +176. The Flames are +1.5 (-143) on the puck line, while the Oilers are -1.5 (+115). The opening total is 6.5, with Over -114 and Under -107.
Calgary defeated Toronto 5-2, Detroit 4-1, Minnesota 2-1 and Carolina 3-2. The Flames’ previous defeat was a 6-2 loss against Vegas.
That’s a much healthier run of results.
Edmonton lost 7-2 to Toronto before falling 4-3 in a shootout against Detroit. The Oilers previously defeated Carolina 6-5 and Minnesota 4-3.
Those games haven’t exactly been defensive clinics.
The Flames won two of three regular-season meetings in 2025-26. Edmonton has the home-ice advantage for this season’s first meeting.
Calgary wants to extend its winning streak. The Oilers would prefer to end their own skid before it becomes a bigger problem.

Oilers Stats
Edmonton has scored 51 goals through 12 games, averaging 4.25 per contest. The Oilers have also scored 14 power-play goals, giving them one of the league’s most dangerous attacks.
They don’t need many chances to do serious damage.
Connor McDavid has 34 points, including eight goals and 26 assists. He’s recorded at least one point in every game this season.
Edmonton’s offense can make opponents look foolish, but its own defensive mistakes have been expensive.
Leon Draisaitl has added 12 goals and 12 assists. The Oilers have enough elite scoring talent to keep opposing coaches awake at night.
Edmonton has also recorded 316 hits. The physical side of its game hasn’t disappeared under Babcock.
The Oilers have allowed 42 goals, an average of 3.5 per contest. That’s a considerable amount of defensive work left unfinished.
Their penalty kill has struggled at 70.6%. Opponents have found opportunities to exploit that weakness.
Flames Stats
Calgary has scored 28 goals through 11 games, averaging 2.55 per contest. The Flames have recorded 50 assists and nine power-play goals.
Their offensive production remains modest.
Joel Farabee leads Calgary with 11 points, including three goals and eight assists. Matvei Gridin has contributed four goals and four assists.
Gridin scored twice against Toronto and finished with three points. He’s giving Calgary a welcome boost.
The Flames have also improved their defensive coverage during this winning streak. They’re playing with more confidence and making fewer careless mistakes.
Calgary has surrendered 41 goals through its first 11 games. Much of that damage came during its difficult opening stretch.
The Flames still have work to do defensively. Edmonton’s offense presents a much tougher test than most opponents.
Flames vs. Oilers Goalie Matchup
Calgary could turn to Devin Cooley after Dustin Wolf started Monday’s win over Toronto. Cooley has won four consecutive starts.
His combined 1.50 GAA and .955 save percentage during that stretch have been outstanding.
Cooley has helped Calgary regain its confidence. He’s given the Flames dependable performances when they badly needed stability in goal.
His starting assignment has not been confirmed.
Wolf remains another option for Huska. Calgary’s final decision will matter against Edmonton’s high-powered attack.
The Oilers have their own questions in net. Devon Levi has been dealing with an injury, leaving Tristan Jarry as a possible option.
Jarry’s availability and starting assignment require confirmation.

Edmonton needs better support from its defense, regardless of who’s in goal. Too many dangerous chances have made life difficult for its netminders.
Calgary must avoid unnecessary penalties and protect the middle of the ice. Giving McDavid and Draisaitl repeated opportunities with the extra skater is asking for trouble.
Both clubs have reasons to tighten up their coverage. The first team to settle into its defensive structure could control the pace.
Calgary Flames vs. Edmonton Oilers bottom line: Calgary brings improved confidence into the rivalry, while Edmonton needs a more disciplined performance to protect its home ice.
Calgary Flames vs. Edmonton Oilers Hockey Betting Trends
- Edmonton has a 2-3 record in their last five games this season.
- Plus, Calgary has won four of their last five games this season.
- Edmonton has hit the over in three of their last five games this season.
- Calgary has seen the total go under in three of their last five games this season.
- Additionally, the Oilers have a straight-up record of 0-2 against Eastern Conference teams this season.
- The Flames have a straight-up record of 3-0 against Western Conference teams this season.
Flames Oilers Free Pick: Under 6.5
Here is my Flames Oilers free pick: Under 6.5. Calgary has stayed Under in three of its past five games, and that’s the kind of approach the Flames need against Edmonton. Trying to outscore McDavid and Draisaitl on their home ice isn’t exactly a retirement plan. Edmonton has gone Over in three of its past five, so the danger is obvious.
But after allowing seven goals against Toronto, the Oilers have every reason to tighten up rather than turn this rivalry into another track meet.
Calgary needs to frustrate Edmonton, and the Oilers need to stop making life easy for opposing shooters.
I’m looking for a tighter opening period, fewer odd-man rushes and a game where both teams make the other earn its chances. That gives the Under a reasonable path without requiring either goalie to stand on his head.
Six goals still cash this bet.
There’s enough offensive talent here to scare anybody holding an Under ticket, but I’m not changing my bet because of two famous names.
I’m on Under 6.5
