2026 NHL Handicapping – New Jersey Devils vs Colorado Avalanche
Here’s why I’m backing an OVER bet below in my Devils Avalanche free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Devils vs. Avalanche Gameday
The New Jersey Devils visit the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at Ball Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. ET, with Altitude and MSGSN carrying the game in their respective markets. New Jersey enters at 8-4-0, while Colorado sits at 6-5-1.
Sheldon Keefe’s Devils have won four straight games and six of their last seven. They’re starting to look like a serious threat in the Eastern Conference.
Colorado has been considerably less predictable.
New Jersey brings the hot streak, but Colorado has enough firepower to ruin anybody’s evening.
Jared Bednar’s Avalanche have lost three of their past four games. Their latest setback against Nashville exposed some familiar problems.
Scoring goals hasn’t been one of them.
The Devils beat Colorado earlier this month, giving them an early advantage in the season series. Now the Avalanche get their chance to answer at home.
There’s plenty of offensive talent on both benches. Keeping that talent under control will be the difficult part.

New Jersey defeated Dallas 5-1, Los Angeles 3-1 and Anaheim 4-1. The Devils also beat Colorado 4-3 on October 20, completing an impressive four-game winning streak.
That’s a solid response after losing 4-2 to Washington.
Colorado fell 6-2 to Nashville after beating Tampa Bay 6-3. The Avalanche also defeated Pittsburgh 5-2 but lost 3-2 to Philadelphia.
Consistency hasn’t exactly been their specialty.
The teams split their two meetings in 2025-26. New Jersey won 4-3 in overtime at home, while Colorado answered with an 8-4 victory at Ball Arena.
The Avalanche have enjoyed some high-scoring success against the Devils in Denver.

Avalanche Stats
Colorado has scored 49 goals through 12 games, averaging 4.08 per contest. The Avalanche have also recorded 89 assists and 351 shots on goal. Their attack remains among the NHL’s most dangerous.
They aren’t having trouble finding the net.
Nathan MacKinnon leads Colorado with 21 points, including seven goals and 14 assists. He’s driving the offense again, which shouldn’t surprise anybody who’s watched him play.
Colorado’s forwards can make a defense look foolish, but the Avalanche have been returning the favor in their own zone.
Artturi Lehkonen has supplied 10 goals and four assists. His finishing ability gives opponents another major threat to handle.
Martin Necas has also been productive with 16 points.
Colorado doesn’t depend entirely on one line to create offense.
The Avalanche have allowed 39 goals, averaging 3.25 against per game. That’s a problem for a club with championship ambitions.
Colorado has been particularly dangerous at home, averaging 5.00 goals per game at Ball Arena. Bednar would certainly welcome a better defensive effort to go with that production.
Devils Stats
New Jersey has scored 41 goals through 12 games, averaging 3.42 per contest. The Devils have also been effective at generating shots and keeping pressure on opposing defenses.
Their offense has found a better rhythm lately.
Jack Hughes leads the team with 14 points, including four goals and 10 assists. Nico Hischier has seven goals, while Arseny Gritsyuk has contributed six goals and four assists.
Hischier has been particularly effective around the net.
The Devils have allowed 32 goals, averaging 2.67 against per game. Their improved defensive structure has helped support the recent winning streak.
New Jersey has recorded 55 takeaways, showing an ability to disrupt opposing attacks. The Devils haven’t been nearly as impressive in hits or blocked shots.
They prefer controlling the puck rather than spending the night chasing it. That approach has worked well during their recent surge.
Devils vs. Avalanche Goalie Matchup
Colorado has relied on Mackenzie Blackwood and Scott Wedgewood in goal this season. Blackwood has recorded five wins and 191 saves through eight appearances.
Wedgewood has contributed 112 saves across four games.
Neither has been immune to the Avalanche’s defensive problems. Too many quality chances have made their jobs harder than necessary.
Colorado’s starting assignment remains unconfirmed.
Blackwood is a possible starter, but Bednar’s decision needs to be established before puck drop. Whoever gets the call will need better support around the crease.
New Jersey has a new option after acquiring Connor Hellebuyck from Winnipeg. The three-time Vezina Trophy winner made his Devils debut Tuesday against Dallas. Hellebuyck stopped 16 of 17 shots in the win.
Jake Allen has also been productive, recording five wins through seven appearances. His experience makes him an important option for Keefe.
The Devils are playing on consecutive nights, making a goalie rotation possible.
Allen is a reasonable candidate, but his starting assignment has not been confirmed.

Colorado needs cleaner coverage in front of its goaltender. Giving opponents repeated chances from dangerous areas has been an expensive habit.
New Jersey has shown it can capitalize on turnovers and create scoring chances off the rush. The Devils will need to stay disciplined against Colorado’s top forwards.
Both teams have enough offensive talent to take control of a game quickly. Their ability to manage mistakes could determine which club leaves with the win.
New Jersey Devils vs. Colorado Avalanche bottom line: Colorado brings outstanding home scoring production, while New Jersey’s balanced attack gives the Devils the tools to challenge the Avalanche.
New Jersey Devils vs. Colorado Avalanche Hockey Betting Trends
- The Avalanche have gone 2-3 straight-up in their last five games.
- Also, New Jersey has won four of their last five games straight-up.
- In their last five games, Colorado has seen the total go over in three instances.
- The Devils have had the total go under in two of their last five games.
- Additionally, the Avalanche have lost three of their last four road games straight-up.
- New Jersey is 3-0 straight-up in their last three home games.
Devils Avalanche Free Pick: Over 6.5
Here is my Devils Avalanche free pick: Over 6.5. Colorado has gone Over in three of its last five games, and New Jersey has the scoring depth to help push this one past the number. I don’t need either club to carry the entire load. The Devils are playing their second game in as many nights, with travel from Dallas to Denver thrown in for good measure. That’s a tough assignment against a Colorado team that can attack in waves, especially once tired legs start showing up in the third period.
Fresh legs aren’t exactly part of New Jersey’s travel package tonight.
The last three meetings between these clubs have produced at least seven goals. That’s the kind of scoring history I want behind this number, particularly with Colorado playing at home.
A 4-3 finish is enough.
I’m expecting the pace to create chances at both ends, and one sloppy defensive stretch could put this total in serious trouble.
My money is on Over 6.5
