Washington got smacked around in Buffalo in Week 3, while the Falcons got their first win of the season at New York. They are available as home underdogs this week.
Washington Football Team
In my write-up of Washington’s matchup with Buffalo in Week 3, I was confident in Buffalo’s powerful offense but not enough to lay the full seven points; instead I recommended buying half a point and backing the Bills.
The added insurance proved unnecessary. Emmanuel Sanders scored a touchdown on the game’s opening possession and Buffalo proceeded to go up 21–0 early in the second quarter.
If it weren’t for Antonio Gibson’s 73-yard score on a screen pass and an unusual recovered kickoff on what was set to be the next possession for Buffalo, it could have been worse.
Washington went into the locker room down only 27–14 at the half. Two long, productive Buffalo possessions ended with field goals instead of touchdowns; a third ended with a defensive stop on fourth-and-short.
The game never really hung in the balance. Buffalo got a stop and Sanders scored again to open the third quarter. A second Taylor Heinicke interception led to a third Buffalo field goal that made it 36–14. Washington went quietly from there.
Atlanta Falcons
New York and Atlanta struggled to move the ball against each other in Week 3. The game featured 11 punts and no touchdowns until each side got one on consecutive possessions in the fourth quarter.
Then Atlanta got a stop, drove the ball 58 yards on six plays, and kicked a 40-yard field goal at the horn to win, 17–14.
The Giants could prove to be a good warm-up for Washington. Both defenses are strong up front. New York sacked Matt Ryan three times and the Falcons didn’t run the ball with much success either.
Ryan did a nice job, however. He didn’t throw an interception and finished 27-of-36 for 243 yards, using Cordarrelle Patterson (six catches, 82 yards) effectively in the short passing game.
Calvin Ridley didn’t break through for anything more than 20 yards but he caught eight balls to lead the team. Olamide Zaccheaus caught the game-tying touchdown and Kyle Pitts had a big gainer to setup the game-winning score.
After two-straight weeks on the road, in which they battled Tampa Bay and then got in the win column, Atlanta ought to be ready to show up for the home fans better than it did in Week 1 when Philadelphia came in and blew the Falcons out, 32–6.
NFL Betting Trends:
- Washington is 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games in Week 4.
- Washington is 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games as a favorite.
- Falcons are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games in Week 4.
- Under is 10-1 in Washington’s last 11 games in October.
- Head to Head: Road team is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 meetings.
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction:
Both defenses should pack more punch than the opposing offense in this one.
Atlanta’s defense benefitted from some poor execution by the opposing offense when it was down in the red zone in Week 3.
Heinicke must play his best football when Washington gets deep inside Falcon territory. The same can be said of Ryan on the other side.
In a matchup that feels fairly even, I like Atlanta for two reasons: the experience and precision of its quarterback as a passer and that home-field advantage.
The Falcons were 3.5-point favorites when they got blown-out by Philadelphia Week 1. They will play better as underdogs this time around.
Play: Atlanta +1.5 & Under 48.0
