Both of these teams lost as the favorite in Week 1.
Washington prevailed in a game against the Giants that went down to the wire on Thursday night.
Buffalo went down to Miami and beat-up on the Dolphins.
The Bills are decisive favorites at home in Week 3.
Washington Football Team
New York and Washington went back and forth several times on Thursday night.
The Giants played well and took a six-point lead with less than five minutes to go.
Then Taylor Heinicke threw an improbable touchdown pass to Ricky Seals-Jones on the edge of the end zone to put Washington up one.
Then it was as if an entire game was played in the last five minutes of the fourth quarter. New York got a first down but had to punt.
Then Heinicke went from the hero to the goat with an interception that led to another Graham Gano field goal that put the Giants back in front.
Heinicke drove his team into field goal range to set up Dustin Hopkins, who missed the game-winning 48-yard field goal.
Except New York was offsides. Hopkins got another chance from 43 and drilled it to even Washington’s record at 1-1.
Heinicke completed 34 passes for 336 yards and played turnover-free football up until the late pick. He does not have the arm strength of his counterpart in this game so he will have to play near perfect to give his side a good chance to win.
Washington will also have to run the ball consistently. Antonio Gibson ran it 13 times for 69 yards against the Giants. Can he handle the load, though? JD McKissic is more of a pass-catcher on third down as the backup half-back.
Then there’s the defense. It hasn’t looked as good as it did at its best last year — yet. That isn’t unexpected. The defensive front has opened the year to lofty expectations. The big plays will come with time.
Buffalo Bills
The Bills washed the sour taste of Week 1’s late loss to the Steelers out of their mouthes with a 35–0 drubbing of the Dolphins on Sunday.
Buffalo ran the ball for over 140 yards and three scores. Josh Allen threw for the other two touchdowns, one to Stefon Diggs and another to his tight end Dawson Knox.
The defense, which was good against Pittsburgh in Week 1 before unraveling a bit in the second half, played a full 60 minutes in Miami. It sacked the Dolphins’ quarterback six times and picked off one pass.
This is another opportunity for that unit to dominate the game. They will make it a point to stop the run and make Heinicke beat them down the field.
4* Free Week 3 NFL Betting Prediction:
Washington’s defense hasn’t looked dominant like it did in the second half of last season.
As soon as we lessen our expectations, though, it may just win it a game like this. A couple big plays off of pressuring Allen and forcing a turnover could shift this game.
Then again, there seems to be something missing from the defense. Opponents are game-planning the fearsome front and attacking the weaknesses, which Washington hasn’t secured yet.
Look for Buffalo to do the same. If Daniel Jones managed to do what he did against Washington in Week 2, Allen should be all right.
Meanwhile, Washington is mismatched on the other side of the ball. Heinicke will not be able to make plays with his arm and his legs to sustain drives, at least not enough of them to keep up with the Bills.
Play: Buffalo -6.5 (buying a point)
