The once 0-2 Redskins have rattled off 4 straight victories and now find themselves just a game out of first place in the NFC East.
The Lions have won 2 in a row after dropping three straight games by a combined 11 points.
This matchup could prove very important for both teams who are both playing good football and could find themselves fighting for the same wild card playoff spot.
The Redskins slowed down rookie Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz simply by keeping the ball out of his hands.
Part of that was due to the strong run game led by Matt Jones but also contributing were the two defensive/special teams touchdowns that the Redskins gave up which kept the Eagles offense on the sideline.
The horrific pick-six that Kirk Cousins threw right to Malcolm Jenkins provided one score for the Eagles while a short kickoff return for touchdown by the Eagles due to Vernon Davis’ post-touchdown celebration provided the other.
While that totaled 14 points on the board for the Eagles, those two plays could have won them the football game.
The two non-offensive touchdowns kept the Redskins offense on the field and Wentz and the Eagles offense never got rolling while the Washington defense held up quite strongly for the 3rd consecutive week.
Washington has now given up just 16.3 points per game over the last three and will now be tested by Matthew Stafford who may be playing the best football of his career.
Despite the 4 straight wins for the Redskins, Cousins still isn’t playing that great. He completed just 53 percent of his passes this week and had an awful interception returned for a touchdown.
Washington’s key to beating Detroit will be running the ball effectively again to keep their defense rested and keep the Lions high powered attack off of the field.
A flurry of injuries to Detroit’s running backs had them signing 30 year old Justin Forsett during the week and relying on Zach Zenner to carry the 1st team reps against the Rams last week.
Zenner was effective enough but yet again it was Stafford who led the way.
Stafford completed 74 percent of his passes for the 2nd straight game and threw for 4 touchdowns while leading the Lions down the field in the final minutes for the game winning field goal.
Throughout his career, Stafford has always put up high numbers but many times it is due to high volume when the Lions are trailing week after week.
However, this season he has been much more effective and efficient. He is third in the NFL in quarterback rating and second in completion percentage.
Of the 14 quarterbacks who have attempted more than 200 passes this season, Stafford is one of the 8 who have 4 or fewer interceptions.
In the past, Stafford has struggled with turnovers and has finished in the top 10 in interceptions thrown in every year but one since 2011.
The defense however was picked apart by Case Keenum who set the Rams franchise record for consecutive completions. For the second week in the row though, the Lions forced a late turnover to seal off the victory.
If that is how Keenum did against the Lions, they could be in trouble against Cousins. Yet, Cousins is prone to turnovers so if Detroit is able to force another late one, that could prove to be the difference.

4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Total Over 49.0
Stafford has been hot lately and the Redskins defense has shown it can be exploited through the air giving up 290+ passing yards in each of the first three weeks to Roethlisberger, Prescott, and Manning.
NFL Free Score Prediction: Detroit 35 – Washington 30
Detroit’s passing defense has looked pretty bad and Cousins has proven he can get hot and throw all over teams as well. I like this game to go over – easily.
