Commanders vs. Cowboys Gameday
Washington travels to AT&T Stadium Sunday looking to avoid an 0-2 start after falling 24-22 to Philadelphia in its opener. Dallas is in exactly the same spot after a 28-20 loss to the Giants. This NFC East matchup kicks off at 4:25 PM ET on FOX.
The Commanders nearly erased an eight-point deficit late against the Eagles, with Jayden Daniels throwing two fourth-quarter touchdown passes. Washington had a chance to tie the game in the final minute, but Philadelphia stopped the two-point conversion.
Washington came two yards from overtime, which is a particularly irritating way to begin September.
Dallas had a different problem. The Cowboys couldn’t get their defense off the field, allowing New York to control possession for 36:40 while Dak Prescott and the offense watched most of the second half.
Brian Schottenheimer’s team scored touchdowns on both of its second-half possessions. Unfortunately, there were only two of them.

Washington Commanders vs. Dallas Cowboys Odds & Last 5
The opening numbers installed Dallas as a 4.5-point favorite with the Cowboys around -207 on the moneyline and Washington approximately +173. The total opened at 50.5.
The spread has since tightened slightly, with Dallas generally sitting around -4 while the total remains 50.5. Apparently losing by eight to the Giants wasn’t enough to scare sportsbooks away from making the Cowboys a home favorite.
Washington’s opener finished with 46 points, although the Commanders produced 13 of their 22 points in the fourth quarter. Dallas and New York combined for 48, with the Cowboys scoring touchdowns on each of their only two second-half possessions.
The Cowboys have also controlled this rivalry recently.
Dallas won four of the previous five meetings, including a 30-23 victory at Washington on Christmas Day last season. That game cleared 50.5, but Sunday’s matchup brings new coordinators and enough roster turnover that last December only deserves so much weight.
Cowboys Stats
Dallas finished Week 1 with only 244 total yards, but that number comes with some context. The Cowboys possessed the football for just 23:20 and ran only 48 offensive plays because their defense couldn’t get New York off the field.
Prescott completed 22 of 34 passes for 175 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. The offense went 8-for-11 on third down and scored touchdowns on all three red-zone trips, so efficiency wasn’t nearly as ugly as the final yardage suggests.
The Cowboys’ biggest offensive problem was spending too much Sunday night watching their own defense.
CeeDee Lamb caught Prescott’s first touchdown, while Javonte Williams added 41 rushing yards and scored both on the ground and through the air. Dallas averaged only 3.8 yards per rush, leaving plenty of work for the passing game.
The defense supplied considerably more concern.
New York piled up 394 yards, rushed for 165 and repeatedly extended drives on third down. Jaxson Dart also hurt Dallas with 54 rushing yards, something that should get everyone’s attention before Daniels walks into AT&T Stadium.
Malik Hooker and DeMarvion Overshown remained out of practice Thursday, while James Houston improved from limited participation Wednesday to full participation.
Commanders Stats
Washington’s 24-22 loss wasn’t the cleanest offensive afternoon, but the Commanders kept grinding until the final possession. Daniels threw for 164 yards and two touchdowns while adding 31 yards on the ground.
The offense generated 295 total yards and 20 first downs against Philadelphia. Jacory Croskey-Merritt helped Washington reach 132 rushing yards, while Stefon Diggs caught four passes for 55 yards and a touchdown.
Most importantly, Washington didn’t disappear when Philadelphia went ahead by eight.
Daniels directed two fourth-quarter touchdown drives and converted a fourth-and-2 on the final possession before finding Antonio Williams for a one-yard score. The tying conversion failed, leaving Washington with an 0-1 record and considerably less reason for panic than the standings suggest.
Defensively, the Commanders allowed 318 total yards and gave up several explosive plays. Philadelphia produced three completions and two runs of at least 20 yards, including three gains that went for more than 40.
Frankie Luvu has been dealing with a groin injury, while defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw was added to Thursday’s report with a back issue.
Those are worth watching against a Dallas offense that still has plenty of ways to attack downfield.

Commanders vs. Cowboys QB Matchup
Dak Prescott didn’t produce a monster stat line against New York, but Dallas’ quarterback had very few possessions with which to work. He threw two touchdowns and an interception while completing 64.7% of his passes.
The Cowboys were particularly effective once they reached scoring territory.
Dallas finished 3-for-3 in the red zone and converted eight of 11 third downs, numbers that look considerably healthier than 20 points and 244 total yards. If the defense can actually return the football occasionally, Prescott should have more chances to attack Washington’s secondary.
Daniels’ legs should have Dallas paying attention after Dart spent Week 1 escaping the pocket.
Jayden Daniels had a quieter passing afternoon against Philadelphia, but his best football came late. He threw both touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and repeatedly extended Washington’s final two scoring drives when the Commanders needed him most.
Dallas just allowed Dart to complete nearly 80% of his passes while adding 54 rushing yards.
Daniels presents the same mobility problem with considerably more NFL experience, so the Cowboys’ new-look defense doesn’t get much time to enjoy the learning curve.
Washington Commanders vs. Dallas Cowboys bottom line: both quarterbacks should find more room than they had in Week 1, and after watching these defenses surrender explosive plays and extended drives, 50.5 doesn’t look quite as enormous as it first appears.

Here is my Commanders Cowboys free pick: Over 50.5 is my play Sunday in Arlington. Both offenses left Week 1 with reasons to believe they can score more, while neither defense exactly slammed the door.
That’s a decent starting point for a total sitting above 50.
Dallas managed only 244 yards against New York, but Prescott still produced two touchdown passes and the Cowboys scored on both second-half possessions. The bigger problem was getting the football back. New York held it for nearly 37 minutes and converted enough third downs to keep Prescott watching.
Dallas can’t score from the sideline, although its defense seems willing to help fix that problem.
Washington brings Daniels into a much friendlier defensive matchup after dealing with Philadelphia. The Commanders also allowed five plays of 20-plus yards in their opener, including three gains of at least 40. Dallas has enough downfield weapons to make those mistakes expensive.
The Cowboys surrendered 394 yards to the Giants and struggled badly against a mobile quarterback, which isn’t ideal preparation for Daniels. Washington scored twice in the fourth quarter against Philadelphia and nearly forced overtime.
Neither offense needs to be perfect here.
This number requires touchdowns, but both defenses showed enough cracks to create them. Over 50.5 is my play.
