The Atlanta Falcons and Tennessee Titans give a first look at their 2021 offerings during Friday’s week 1 preseason matchup.
Sporting heavy roster change, Atlanta hopes to gel quick during a short exhibition slate. The Falcons are mired in losing football after finishing 2020 4-12. Meanwhile, Super Bowl contender Tennessee seeks routine maintenance before beginning its march for a third straight playoff berth.
Tennessee Titans
The Tennessee Titans made slight offseason defensive upgrades to bolster a premier offensive attack. Proven ball stoppers Bud Dupree, Denico Autry and rookie Caleb Farley each look to infuse last year’s #24 ranked unit.
While those names acclimate, former Falcons All Pro wideout Julio Jones becomes yet another weapon in Tennessee’s versatile scoring attack. The 2020 Titans averaged 30.4 points behind Ryan Tannehill’s arm and Derrick Henry’s feet. Dual threat Tannehill tossed 33 scores and ran for seven last fall during an efficiency clinic. Derrick Henry inked his name among NFL history by gaining 2027 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns – both 2020 league bests.
Henry and Tannehill should have impact Friday during limited action.
Reserves Logan Woodside and Darrynton Evans will replace their superstar counterparts for extended playing time vs. Atlanta. Woodside has yet to attempt a regular season NFL pass after entering league consciousness as a 2018 seventh-round pick from Toledo. Former Cleveland starter Deshone Kizer is the emergency Titans QB. Evans looks to impress after gaining 54 yards on 14 carries as a 2020 rookie.

With the offensive depth chart settled, Titans defensive coordinator Shane Bowen finds a more competitive mix between his personnel. Look for Bowen to make frequent substitutions while battling Matt Ryan and company.
Starting wideouts Josh Reynolds and Julio Jones remain questionable, and will likely appear in limited snaps this week. Jones, now 32, played nine games, gaining 51 rec. while nursing injuries in his final Atlanta campaign.
Atlanta Falcons
After replacing Dan Quinn and former GM Thomas Dimitroff with Arthur Smith and Terry Fontenot, Falcons brass seeks renewed winning culture. Smith rose to prominence while guiding the Tennessee Titans offense, and has invaluable insight of Ryan Tannehill.
Former MVP Matt Ryan could benefit from his new head coach’s freewheeling passing schemes. Still viable at 36, Ryan amassed 4, 581 yards & 24 touchdowns last season. Calvin Ridley emerged from Julio Jones’s shadow to become Ryan’s main target among a promising downfield corps Unfortunately, Atlanta’s aerial defense fell flat, allowing more yards than any other team as the Falcons ended 2020 4-12.
Newly hired general manager Fontenot addressed his team’s glaring weakness by adding impact secondary performers Duron Harmon, Erik Harris and Richie Grant. Those names should gain ample field time vs. Tennessee as defensive play caller Dean Pees gathers intel.
With franchise cornerstone Ryan being protected this exhibition season, look for backup QB AJ McCarron often Friday. Mike Davis and Qadree Ollison form the Atlanta backfield for what figures to be a pass-first offense.
