Who would have thought, the defending Super Bowl Champions are 0-2 this preseason while a team many predict to finish with the worst record in the NFL have gone 2-0 and look to finish exhibition play with a perfect record.
Does something have to give when the Buccaneers play the Texans on Saturday night in Houston? Not really, but it’s still interesting that Tampa Bay is a -4 point favorite coming into this tilt.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Obviously the Bucs not only have a bit of a Super Bowl hangover going on, but also bigger fish to fry as they look for a repeat. Therefore forgive the 0-2 record this preseason, even though its been pretty ugly.
Tampa Bay’s resume this exhibition season includes a 19-14 home loss to Cincinnati when getting torched by the likes of Kyle Shurmur and Jacques Patrick. That preseason opening loss paled in comparison to the 34-3 thumping Tennessee dished out last week.
Believe it or not Tom Brady actually threw a couple passes in the exhibition opener, but the 21-year vet probably doesn’t need the reps on Saturday night. TB12 better be working this season though, because the QB situation behind Brady looks bleak.
Rookie Kyle Trask has big upside, but he’s also gone 17/41 this preseason throwing for just 35 yards on 15 attempts vs. Cincy in his NFL debut. Trask threw 2 picks last week as well, and fellow QB tossed a couple INTs in the opener. For the Bucs to cover they’ll need a big night from Blaine Gabbert and he’s thrown for just 99 yards in two exhibition games.
Saturday marks just another game for Super Bowl champ and longtime NFL stalwart Bruce Arians of Tampa Bay, but to Houston’s David Culley this is a great opportunity to invoke a winning culture in a team that is 300:1 to win the Super Bowl, even behind the Lions.
There’s a lot of uncertainty with the Deshaun Watson situation, but the Texans are making do with what they have. Tyrod Taylor had some hard luck in suffering an injury from a trainer that opened the door for Justin Herbert with the Chargers, but he may have found a home in Houston.
Taylor hit 4/4 for 40 yards in the preseason opener against Green Bay, but was just 2/5 last week vs. Dallas. The vet is still eager to show what he has even after 10 years in the league, but doesn’t have anything to prove and should sit on Saturday.
The Texans are really seeing what they have in Davis Mills, a 3rd round pick who wasn’t particularly impressive at Stanford. Mills is 21 of 38 this preseason though, but maintains his conservative play with 0 TD.
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Texans +4
Tampa Bay really shouldn’t be favored in this one. Culley needs this win to invigorate the fan base in what is looking like a dreary Texans season without J.J. Watt and possibly Watson for the first time in a few years. The regular season is a different story, but Culley will take this small milestone.
