Tom Brady and the Bucs continue to fight to hold on to the NFC South lead but welcome a white hot Cincinnati.
Brady is coming off a blowout loss on the road at the Niners last week that saw the offense only put up 7 points. There are plenty of concerns in Tampa, namely, can they get some semblance of old Brady back? His two interceptions didn’t help matters, but the skill positions are actually healthy. The o-line has been a mess the entirety of this season though.
Cincinnati are winners of 5 straight games and were never really pressed in their Week 14 bout with the Browns. The defense has really tightened the screws in recent weeks, including holding Nick Chubb to 34 yards rushing and picking off Watson. Chris Godwin and Mike Evans represent a step up in competition however.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
By this point in the season we pretty much know who each team is. Tampa’s story is not unlike their past squads; they can’t run the ball and all the load falls on Brady. It hasn’t been pretty either, with the offense averaging 15.6 ppg over their last 5 games.
Chris Godwin is the focal point of the Tampa passing attack, averaging 11.7 targets per game since the bye. He draws a Bengals defense sitting 9th in passing D by DVOA. Mike Evans has been stymied from reaching the endzone since Week 3, so it’s possible we see some positive regression.
Tampa has lived off of their defense to combat their anemic offense. Outside of getting blown out in San Fran, the Bucs have limited opponents to just 18.3 ppg, and that includes a 41 point surrender to KC. Tampa has struggled of late, allowing the 11th highest EPA/dropback since week 11.
Cincinnati Bengals
Cincinnati is getting hot at the right time as we head into the seed determination portion of the regular season. Since beginning their winning streak in week 9, the Bengals are #1 in EPA/play and have gotten Ja’Marr Chase back from injury. Joe Burrow’s home win over KC was their watershed moment.
Joe Mixon returned from injury last week and put up 94 yards against the Browns’ historically bad run defense. Samaje Perine continues to be a contributing member of their backfield, and I’m always a fan of two-headed monsters.
While DVOA is still a fan of the Tampa defense, the more raw number, EPA, says they’ve struggled. Cincinnati can take advantage of a Tampa defense that surrendered 209 rushing yards in Santa Clara.
Because Tampa is a non-existent rushing threat, the Bengals can comfortably sit back in bigger secondary packages and focus on Godwin. Since week 9, the Bengals are top-10 in EPA/dropback allowed, showing that they should be able to create enough problems for Brady.

While the arrow is pointing up for Cincinnati and the arrow down on the Bucs, I don’t think these two teams are THAT far apart.
I also love getting over 3 points with Brady at home. Since 2020, the Bucs are 3-0 ATS as home underdogs, covering by an average of 18.7 points (!). Tampa is also 5-0 ATS since 2020 after a loss, covering by an average of 12.0 points.
Based on the trends, I think this is a good time to buy low on the Bucs and see a market correction for a Bengals team that played poorly on Sunday and still managed to beat the Browns. You could even sprinkle a little on the ML if you felt frisky.
