Two teams with very different situations at QB meet up to kick off their 2021 seasons when the Seahawks visit the Colts on Sunday. Russell Wilson enters his 10th season under center for Seattle coming off a career high 40TD season while the Colts begin the year with a possibly banged up Carson Wentz.
It’s somewhat strange that the Seahawks are just a 3 point favorite in this contest after going 12-4 and winning a tough NFC West division last year. Granted the Colts were 11-5, but losing Phillip Rivers to retirement and Wentz being unavailable for most of the preseason will leave a big hole at the QB spot.
Seattle Seahawks
The Seahawks are always a threat with Wilson commanding the offense. The 32 year old is aging like a fine wine posting his highest completion percentage (68.8%) and TDs (40) while throwing 13 INT.
Wilson has plenty of toys to play with, none more impressive than DK Metcalf who has compiled 2200 yards and 17 TD through his first two NFL seasons. Tyler Lockett is finding his groove in this offense as well, posting 965+ receiving yards in three straight seasons.
So what are some of the reasons that Seattle would be just a 3-point favorite in this matchup? Wilson was disgruntled in the offseason, but seems to have patched things up with the front offense and will have a new offensive coordinator with Shane Waldron replacing Brian Schottenheimer.
Seattle should also be better on the offensive line this season, and giving Wilson more time to make plays is scary. Tackle Duane Brown is happy after a contract restructuring, and the team traded for Gabe Jackson in the offseason to give them arguably the best guard tandem in the league with Damien Lewis.
Indianapolis Colts
While the Colts initially thought Wentz would miss at least the first month of the season with a broken foot, the former Eagles QB has returned to practice and will be available for week 1.
Wentz obviously has more experience than backup Jacob Eason who has never thrown a regular season pass, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some question marks. Wentz led the NFL in INTs last season (15) despite playing in only 12 games, and didn’t have as many opportunities to learn a new offense this preseason thanks to his foot injury.
The Colts do have a talented young running back in former Wisconsin Badger Jonathan Taylor, as well as some punishing backups and arguably the best offensive line in football. That’s the perfect recipe for Wentz to have success on Sunday.
Indianapolis also only improved their defense in the offseason by adding Kwity Paye out of Michigan with the #21 pick. Paye had the highest graded preseason for a defensive rookie according to PFF, and joins All-Pros Darius Leonard and DeForest Buckner on that side of the bal.

4* Free Week 1 NFL Betting Prediction: Seahawks -3
If you’re sold on Wentz, then the Colts as home underdogs doesn’t look bad. Indianapolis has the defense and the run game, but how can you back Wentz in a new offense, basically without a preseason, and who was bad last year anyways?
The Seahawks on the other hand are the real deal. Wilson has a new offensive coordinator and weapons upon weapons.
