Seahawks vs. Cardinals Gameday
Seattle heads to State Farm Stadium Sunday with a 1-0 record and a new quarterback situation for Week 2. The Seahawks rallied from a 10-point deficit to beat New England 13-10 in the opener, while Arizona went into Los Angeles and handled the Chargers 26-14. This NFC West matchup kicks off at 4:25 PM ET on FOX.
Mike Macdonald’s Seahawks got almost nothing offensively early against New England after Sam Darnold left on the opening drive with a glute injury. Drew Lock came off the bench and eventually settled things down, with Jaxon Smith-Njigba supplying the biggest offensive play of the night.
Seattle’s defense did most of the heavy lifting, intercepting Drake Maye three times in the second half.
That defense will see an Arizona team that looked far more comfortable than expected in Mike LaFleur’s debut. Jacoby Brissett played clean football, Trey McBride remained the obvious problem in the middle of the field, and the Cardinals never trailed after taking control in the second quarter.

The opening numbers made Seattle a 4.5-point road favorite, with the Seahawks around -209 on the moneyline and Arizona approximately +174.
The market still has Seattle laying around 4 to 4.5 points, while the total has generally nudged to 41.5. Losing Darnold hasn’t flipped the favorite, but it certainly gives bettors something more interesting to consider than Seattle’s shiny 1-0 record.
Seattle’s opener was every bit as low scoring as that number suggests. The Seahawks trailed 10-0 before Lock and Smith-Njigba finally connected for the game’s only Seattle touchdown, while the defense turned three second-half interceptions into the comeback fuel.
Arizona had considerably more fun in Los Angeles.
The Cardinals beat the Chargers 26-14 as Brissett threw for 277 yards and Arizona controlled possession for more than 37 minutes.

Arizona enters its home opener after one of Week 1’s more impressive road wins. The Cardinals generated 393 yards against Los Angeles, with Brissett completing 25 of 34 passes for 277 yards and one touchdown without an interception.
Trey McBride picked up where he left off last season, catching nine passes for 95 yards and a touchdown. Arizona also got 102 combined rushing yards from Tyler Allgeier and rookie Jeremiyah Love, giving LaFleur enough balance to keep the Chargers from simply chasing Brissett all afternoon.
The Cardinals didn’t need anything particularly exotic; they simply kept moving the chains.
Arizona’s defense was even more encouraging. The Cardinals held Los Angeles to 268 total yards, recorded three sacks and allowed the Chargers to convert only three of 12 third downs.
That performance came with a little special-teams assistance, too. A blocked punt gave Arizona possession at the Chargers’ 3-yard line and set up an easy touchdown, which is worth remembering before treating 26 points as entirely offensive production.

Seattle’s 13-10 win wasn’t pretty, but the defending champions probably won’t be returning it for store credit. The Seahawks lost Darnold on their opening possession, fell behind 10-0 and still found a way to escape behind Lock and a defense that took over late.
Lock completed 16 of 22 passes for 187 yards and one touchdown without a turnover. Smith-Njigba caught eight passes for 122 yards, including the 45-yard fourth-quarter touchdown that finally woke up an offense that had spent most of the night looking stuck in preseason.
The defense was the real story.
Seattle intercepted Maye three times in the second half, including Josh Jobe’s end-zone pick that finished the game, and held New England to 277 total yards.
There was still plenty for Macdonald to clean up. The Seahawks committed 10 penalties for 98 yards, including several that directly extended New England drives or wiped away Seattle opportunities, which is a fairly expensive way to make a 13-10 win harder than necessary.
Darnold has now been ruled out for Sunday with the glute injury, so Lock will make the start. Cooper Kupp improved from limited Wednesday to a full practice Thursday, while Tory Horton practiced fully both days; Ty Okada remained out and Nick Emmanwori was limited.

Jacoby Brissett enters Week 2 with the starting job and a clean opener behind him. He completed 25 of 34 passes for 277 yards and a touchdown against the Chargers, avoiding the turnover that could have invited Los Angeles back into the game.
Brissett doesn’t need to turn Arizona into an aerial circus.
McBride gives him a dependable middle-of-the-field target, and the Cardinals showed enough on the ground to keep the offense from becoming one-dimensional. Against a Seattle secondary that just intercepted three passes, protecting the football may matter more than chasing another 277-yard afternoon.
Drew Lock gets a very different Week 2 experience.
Instead of entering cold after Darnold’s first-drive injury, Lock has spent the week practicing as Seattle’s starter.
His 16-of-22 performance against New England included 187 passing yards, a touchdown and no interceptions, and he showed enough composure to lead the Seahawks back from a 10-point deficit.
The obvious question is how much Seattle asks him to do on the road.
Arizona just held Justin Herbert and the Chargers to 14 points, while Seattle has a defense capable of keeping this game manageable without Lock trying to become Patrick Mahomes for an afternoon.
Seattle Seahawks vs. Arizona Cardinals bottom line: both defenses made convincing opening statements, and with Seattle turning to Lock, this has all the ingredients for the kind of division game where every first down starts feeling strangely important.

Seahawks Cardinals Free Pick: Under 41
Here is my Seahawks Cardinals free pick: Under 41 is my play Sunday in Arizona. Seattle survived Week 1 with 13 points after losing Sam Darnold on the opening drive, and Drew Lock now gets the start. That helps, but it does not suddenly make this a shootout setup.
Seattle’s defense intercepted Drake Maye three times and allowed only 10 points. Arizona was just as annoying defensively, holding the Chargers to 14 points and 268 yards. Both defenses gave their offenses plenty of room for error.
Forty-one isn’t generous, but neither offense has earned a bigger number.
The Cardinals were efficient against LAC without turning Brissett into a volume passer, and Seattle has every reason to protect Lock with its defense and running game. That points toward longer possessions, fewer reckless throws and fewer opportunities for this total to get silly.
Arizona’s 26 points also benefited from a blocked punt that handed the Cards the ball at the Bolts’ 3-yard line. Seattle scored 13 despite JSN producing 122 receiving yards. Those are useful reminders that the final scores were not entirely driven by sustained offense.
The number is tight, but the matchup fits it.
I’ll take both defenses to keep the pace uncomfortable and scoring modest.
