The reigning NFC Champions are now on a 2-game losing streak, after being downed in Denver in the Super Bowl and then again in the NFL season opener last Thursday.
On Monday night football first-half TD’s from Carlos Hyde and Shaun Draughn gave the Niners a nice lead as the Rams led by QB quarterback Case Keenum were shutout 28-0.
Kickoff is set for 1:00PM ET with MVP QB Cam Newton getting the start for the Carolina., facing the newly anointed starter, Blaine Gabbert, behind center for the 49ers.
San Francisco 49ers
Blaine Gabbert is now the starter in San Francisco, as back-up Colin Kapernick has had quite the fall from grace over the past season and a half.
Interesting to see if this sticks all year, as Kap seems to be a good fit in new head coach, Chip Kelly’s, high-tempo offense.
The 49ers WR corps have diminished, with the aging Torrey Smith leading as the prime target. Granted, Smith is set for a career year if the trend holds true for #1 wideouts in Kelly’s offense.
Carlos Hyde showed he is the feature of the offense, as he is likely the most talented skill player in San Fran. He should see a number of carries but faces a stingy Carolina defense.
The 49ers defense is no longer the vaunted one is was just a couple years ago but it has still got life. Arik Armstead is a nice young talent, but veteran NaVarro Bowman still leads the crew and Eric Reid just keeps on laying wood on people.
Cam Newton was the best QB in the league last year, but there are questions abroad of whether he can duplicate his tremendous 2015 season.
He is surely still a top play caller in the NFL, and has his best weapon in Kelvin Benjamin back and looking strong.
Last season, Cam threw for 3,837 years while adding 636 on the ground with his tremendous running ability, combining for 45 total TDs.
Running back Jonathan Stewart still leads the carries in the backfield, and though he’s not an elite talent, he gains some time with defenses having to focus on Newton carrying the ball as well.
Luke Kuechly captains a defense that grades out as one of the top in the NFL.
There are certainly missing top-cornerback Josh Norman who departed from the team in the off-season, but there are a number of talents that should be able to step-up and shoulder the load.
NFL Betting Trends:
- San Francisco went 5-11 in 2015
- Blaine Gabbert has a career QB rating of 71.9
- Blaine Gabbert has never thrown for over more than 2,215 yards in any season
- Carolina’s defense tallied 24 INT and 44 sacks last season
- Carolina went at a perfect 8-0 home last year
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Carolina -6.5
Look for the Panthers to have a redemption game after losing in Week 1 on the road in Denver.
With the 49ers on the road in a tough stadium and Blaine Gabbert under center, it’s seem highly unlikely they’ll put up much of a fight.
NFL Free Score Prediction: San Francisco 17 – Carolina 31
I think Cam takes over and the offense explodes here, while the defense proves that the win Trevor Simeon earned against him was a fluke.
