New Orleans will visit New England for a matchup of two teams that have started the first two weeks 1-1.
But while the Saints are coming off the painful loss as road favorites against a divisional foe, Mac Jones and the Patriots are returning home with their first victory of 2021 under their belts.
New Orleans Saints
After demolishing the Packers in Week 1, the Saints went into Carolina as field goal favorites.
Jameis Winston had turned over a new leaf and the defense that made New Orleans a contender a year ago was back and better than ever.
That narrative was proven to be an exaggeration by the feisty Panthers, who jumped out to a 17–0 halftime lead and went on to win, 26–7.
Winston, coming off a five touchdown game, threw two picks and finished just 11-for-22 with 111 yards.
The Saints ground game was as bad. Alvin Kamara finished with more carries (8) than yards (5). Winston and backup quarterback Taysom Hill were the two leading rushers and neither reached 20 yards on his own.
It’s hard to compete as a defense when your team’s offense is that bad but the Panthers carved the Saints up early, before their lack of offense really had time to fatigue the defense.
The front got little pressure on quarterback Sam Darnold and he found holes in the secondary, finishing with 305 yards and two TDs.
Carolina’s run-first approach should mimic New England’s this week. Let’s see if the Saints can make adjustments.
New England Patriots
In each of his first two starts, Mac Jones has leaned on the running game to make his life easier as a passer.
Damien Harris ran for over 100 yards in Week 1. He didn’t quite have that many yards in Week 2 but he handled 16 carries for 62 yards and a touchdown against the Jets in Week 2. James White added a touchdown run of his own.
Jones, meanwhile, completed 22-of-30 passes but for just 186 yards. He did not turn the ball over, however.
Things are limited in New England at the moment with the green rookie still getting his feet under him but there will be added emphasis on getting the ball downfield this week. You simply cannot hang around without some vertical passing in today’s game.
This may be a dangerous spot to get too aggressive, however. Bad as the Saints’ defense looked against Carolina, it’s a strong unit that doesn’t give up many big plays and is always looking for the takeaway.
4* Free Week 3 NFL Betting Prediction:
This game should be close most of the way, which makes it tough to play the under. Whether or not the total goes over will depend a lot on red zone efficiency.
The Patriots have the advantage against Winston down there and it would seem the same can be said for the Saints against Jones. For that reason, the under is a go, though just a small one.
Take New Orleans as an even-money pick, too. The Saints have their flaws but they can get the ball down the field better than New England can at this moment. Week 2’s performance should have them motivated to play better on the road in Week 3.
Play both for half to make this a full one unit game.
Play: New Orleans (+100) & Under 47
