Carolina got up early and hung on to cover the 3.5 points against the New York Jets in Week 1.
Oddsmakers touted the Saints at 4-point underdogs against the Packers in Week 1. So much for that. New Orleans rolled by five touchdowns.
Now begins divisional football. Is the NFC South nothing more than a slugfest between New Orleans and Tampa Bay or will Carolina prove a pesky contender among the mix?
New Orleans Saints
With the Superdome unavailable following Hurricane Ida, the Saints relocated camp to Fort Worth, Texas and opened their season “at home” in Jacksonville, Florida.
They have been preparing for things to look different even before Drew Brees retired in June.
They brought in Jameis Winston a year earlier. On Sunday, in Week 1, against the team that went a round further than New Orleans before suffering the same fate at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in last year’s playoffs, he he played phenomenally.
Winston looked nothing like the quarterback Tom Brady replaced in Tampa Bay. Actually, he looked a bit like Brady himself, leaning on his defense and running game to coast to victory.
He did not take a sack and completed 14 of 20 passes for 5 TDs. Alvin Kamara and Tony Jones Jr. handled 31 carries at an average of 4.29 yards.
But what you have to like about the Saints is that defense comes first. It intercepted Aaron Rodgers twice, sacked him twice, and sent him to the bench in the fourth quarter. A rookie came up with a red-zone interception on the first possession of the second half when it was still just a two-score game.
Carolina Panthers
Though less resounding, Carolina’s Week 1 win was a win.
Now it’s back at home with a chance to start the season 2–0 and get its first win in the division.
Christian McCaffrey led the Panthers in rushing and receiving with just less than 100 yards of both.
Sam Darnold played turnover-free football and hit his old pal Robby Anderson for a long one.
The Panthers’ defense plays good football, too. They sacked the Jets’ rookie six times and intercepted him another time.
4* Free Week 2 NFL Betting Prediction:
The Saints have opened available as 3-point favorites for an extra sip (-115). They will receive the majority of public action; if it’s too much, too fast, that number will get the hook.
In a game that figures to be down in the 20s and could well end up a race to 20, an extra half-point on the three looms large.
If the Saints can’t run it on the Panthers like they did the Packers, will the old Jameis Winston be waiting to show up? Carolina is familiar territory, after all.
Where the bookie really needs some action, though, isn’t on the spread but the moneyline, where the largest books are dangling better than 3/2.
