There’s no Tom Brady and there probably won’t be a “Philly Special” but the Patriots and Eagles continue their preseason slates in a Super Bowl LII rematch that Philadelphia won 41-33 back in 2018.
The main angle heading into this preseason week 2 matchup is a couple of former Alabama QBs under center for their respective teams. Mac Jones looked good, albeit conservative last week for New England while Jalen Hurts could’ve had better numbers if not for a couple drops and a near miss on a long score.
New England Patriots
New England had a hard fought matchup in their preseason opener against a Washington defense that is expected to be one of the best in the NFL in 2021. The Patriots still came away with a 22-13 win thanks to some impressive running by a rookie 4th rounder.
Rhamondre Stevenson was the difference maker in last week’s win over WFT, gaining 127 yards on 10 carries with 2 TDs. That includes a 91-yarder with 1:04 left in the game that was the icing on the cake. The Eagles backup defense blew a lead last week, so the opportunity to take over late could be there again for New England.
The Patriots QB controversy hasn’t yet come to fruition, as New England played it relatively safe on offense last week. Cam Newton was 4/7 for 49 yards while Mac Jones went 13/19 for 87 yards. Neither QB engineered a TD drive and the Patriots held a thin 9-7 lead going into the 4th quarter.
New England did give up 122 yards on the ground and another 245 through the air to a Washington offense that isn’t especially good. That has to give the Eagles hope on Thursday night.
Philadelphia Eagles
WFT threw the ball 47 times against the New England secondary last week behind the combination of Ryan Fitzpatrick, Taylor Heinicke, and Steven Montez. If the Eagles follow a similar approach, they should be able to move the ball as the experienced Joe Flacco is now the backup in Philly.
Flacco was 10 of 17 last week and threw a short pass to Quez Watkins that he took 79 yards for a score. Hold off on the QB controversy talks however, as Jalen Hurts was 3 for 7 but had a couple drops and just missed on what could have been a 98 yard TD pass.
The Philadelphia 1st team did their job in the preseason opener, posting a 13-0 lead right before the 2 minute warning at halftime before being outscored 24-3 by the Steelers backups. That’s saying something too, because it was already Pittsburgh’s 2nd preseason contest after playing in the Hall of Fame game against Dallas.
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Eagles +1.5
The Patriots were very conservative in their approach in the preseason opener, and although Bill Belichick has gone 3-1 in 3 of the last 4 preseasons, you’d think Eagles coach Nick Sirianni would want to establish a winning culture in his first year at the helm.
Flacco could actually be the difference in this one. Hurts is the starter, but he is by no means a sure thing. Flacco has the experience and New England’s defense struggled at times vs. the relatively inexperienced Washington QBs. Hurts has something to prove too, so expect Sirianni to open up the playbook a bit.
