The Patriots are among these teams that make zero sense. And going into this one I was defending Mac and saying the QB battle narrative was ridiculous, which it still kind of is I suppose but now it’s looking like it could be a more serious discussion.
Zappe came in after Mac’s third series that ended with a pick to the DB he just kicked in the nards and gave the squad and the crowd a huge boost early.
They marched down field on his first drive and scored a massive touchdown, they ended up getting another but that was it and the Bears ran away with it.
At least last night was an exciting primetime game though which was refreshing, it was just shocking to see the Patriots get dismantled by the Bears.
Heading into this one we have a lot of questions about Jets key injuries to Breece Hall and Vera-Tucker who is an all-pro guard.
So let’s dive in a little closer.
New England Patriots
For all the talk about this defence being good they really are a middle of the pack unit. The game last night obviously inflates the analytics a bit and might not be something to read too much into long term, but nonetheless the numbers aren’t super impressive.
Allowing 20 points a game, 345 yards per game, and 5.5 yards per play. Not great.
And then there’s the play of Mac Jones who has not looked good to start the year. I still believe that the Patriots coaching staff very much believes that Mac is still their guy moving forward and will continue to plan each week that way.
Unless he really shits the bed, Zappe remains QB2.
New York Jets
The Jets are sneaky 5-2 and finally giving the fans something to cheer about. And I am here for it, even as a lifelong Patriots fan I genuinely love seeing them play well right now.
Unfortunately these injuries are crucial losses to why they are having success, namely first year RB Breece Hall. He has had an incredible start to his year and it’s super unfortunate for him to go down for the season.
Always tragic but man this one stings.
What’s interesting is that their defence is surprisingly and quietly one of the better units in the AFC. They are 6th in the league at allowing yards per play to their opponents at a stingy 4.9 yards.
