The Minnesota defense was supposed to be retooled and healthy coming into 2021, but that didn’t look the case in the season opener as Joe Burrow and the Bengals carved up the Vikings unit for a 27-24 win. Things don’t get any easier for Minnesota on the road again in week two against Arizona.
The Cardinals cruised to a 38-13 win in Tennessee last weekend where Kyler Murray not only looked like an MVP candidate, but the front runner. Arizona’s defense showed up too, holding the Titans to under 250 total yards of offense.
Minnesota Vikings
The Vikings did do some things right in week 1. Adam Thielen had a couple of TD catches, Justin Jefferson got loose for a 34-yard reception down to the 1-yard line, and Kirk Cousins threw for 351 yards and a couple of scores (with no INT). Greg Joseph even hit a 53-yard field goal as time expired to send the game into OT.
Two things failed Minnesota in the opener though – their lack of running game and a defense that couldn’t get big stops. Dalvin Cook ran for 1500+ yards last season but could only get loose for 61 on 20 carries against the Bengals.
Cook may see his share of struggles again in week two as Arizona held Derrick Henry to 58 yards on 17 carries last week. We’ve seen that Minnesota having success in the passing game doesn’t always equate to a win, so something will have to be different in this matchup.
The Vikings defense had their share of struggles against Burrow and the Bengals offense. Some that Burrow might be a bit shaky playing his first regular season game since an ACL tear, but he looked very comfortable going 20/27 with 2 TD. Joe Mixon added 127 yards and a score on the ground.
Arizona Cardinals
All eyes are going to be on Kyler Murray in this contest after he threw 4 TD in the season opener and also added a TD run. The Cardinals look like they have a nice trio of receivers with Deandre Hopkins and Christian Kirk both catching a pair of TD passes and rookie Rondale Moore catching 4 balls for 68 yards in his first NFL action.
The Vikings have an experienced secondary that includes Harrison Smith and Adam Thielen, but Ja’Marr Chase was able to get open for a 50-yard score in week 1. That’s good news for Hopkins and Kirk, and maybe even A.J. Green who had just 2 catches for 25 yards in his team debut.
The Vikings did have 5 sacks against Burrow last week, but that’s going to be much tougher against the mobile Murray. The Cardinals also look like they have a nice backfield combo in James Conner and Chase Edmonds, who combined for 116 yards on 28 carries.
The Arizona defense will have their hands full with the Vikings offense, but the Cardinals held Tennessee to 86 yards rushing and limited Ryan Tannehill to a 21/35 day for 212 yards.

4* Free Week 2 NFL Betting Prediction: Vikings +4.5
Everybody is going to be on the Cardinals this week because they looked so good playing in Tennessee. Arizona returns for their home opener, and there’s some electricity surrounding this team especially in the passing game.
The thing is, the Vikings are better than they played in week 1. If the defense can retool a bit, that offense can hang with anybody and that’s certainly true if they can get Dalvin Cook going in this spot.
