Two AFC East division rivals will be squaring off in week 1 for the 2nd consecutive year.
Both of these clubs missed out on the playoffs a year, ago, but many folks think both could end up in the playoffs this year. I expect both of them to have strong years.
New England has remained a field goal favorite even with the news that Mac Jones will be the starting quarterback in week 1. Also, most books that I have looked at are listing the total at 43.5.
Miami Dolphins
Head coach Brian Flores has built a very good culture in Miami. The situation in Miami presently is much better than what it was even a couple of years ago with Adam Gase. To me, the days of the Dolphins being a laughing stock are over for a while.
Although the Fins missed out on the postseason a year ago, they still had a good year. The team went 10-6, which was a big improvement for them. Also, they were competitive in almost all their games, even when going against tough opponents.
The biggest strength of this team is their defense. Some key players on this unit are Jerome Baker and Xavien Howard. They are without linebacker Kyle Van Noy, who is now with the Patriots.
The offense is still questionable. The main reason why is not because lack of playmakers, but the unknown with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. He showed glimpses of what he can be last year, but the consistency was not there. He often did not look confident when he threw the ball down field.
These team has the potential to be very good, but they still have to show me more.
New England Patriots
We all found out last year, good coaching can only get a team so far. You have to have at least average quarterback play to be relevant and Cam Newton was downright dreadful last year. Because of that, it is no surprise that New England cut him loose.
Brady is gone and has won a championship in Tampa. Newton is out of New England and likely will not play a game again. It is now the Mac Jones era, folks. The rookie quarterback did not look out of position in training camp, and he will look to carry that over into week 1.
The team in 2020 was quite frankly not that good. To me, it was a miracle they won 7 games with that ragtag crew. The offense was the worst part because Cam Newton limited what the team could do. I expect the offense to be more free flowing with the rookie.
The main reason this team was even slightly relevant a year ago is because for the most part, the defense was good. That unit should be better as they now have Kyle Van Noy back along with the acquisition of Matthew Judon from the Ravens.
The defense will have another crack at Tua this year. Historically, Belichick has done quite well against young quarterbacks in Foxboro. I feel the defense will be the main reason this team wins on Sunday.

4* Free Week 1 NFL Betting Prediction: Patriots Moneyline
I feel more confident with the Patriots winning straight up than against the spread, even though my score prediction has them winning by more than 3. I look for both defenses to be sharp in this game and I would be very surprised if it turns out to a high scoring affair. I am not necessarily predicting that Mac Jones will be great, but I think he will be good enough to get a win. I look for the Patriots to run the ball a lot behind their impressive offensive line.
