The New England Patriots will host the red-hot Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional round as both teams try to reach the AFC Championship Game.
Kick off is set for 4:35 PM ET as the banged-up New England Patriots try to spoil Kansas City’s 11-game winning streak.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs silenced any doubters after their road shutout against the Houston Texans in the AFC Wild Card matchup on Saturday.
Knile Davis took the opening kickoff 106 yards to the endzone and the Chiefs never looked back, forcing five Brian Hoyer turnovers in a lopsided 30-0 victory in Houston.
Kansas City’s defense was one of the NFL’s best over the second half of the season and has been especially dangerous over the last five games.
During that span, the Chiefs have allowed 47 points, equating to less than 10 points per contest.
Kansas City’s offense was heavily reliant on its running game this year, finishing the regular season 30th in passing offense and 6th in rushing offense.
Alex Smith, who is one of the NFL’s best when it comes to holding on to the football, will need to be at his best against a New England defense that is very good in its own right.
New England Patriots
The New England Patriots were ravaged by injuries during the second half of the season, and it was obvious as Tom Brady and the rest of the New England offense struggled to put points on the board during the season’s final month.
The Patriots lost four of their last six games and only scored a combined 30 points in their last two games.
New England is hoping to get Julian Edelman back after the wide receiver broke a bone in his foot in Week 9, and his return would be a much-needed boost to a Patriots offense that looked pretty pedestrian as the regular season came to a close.
But the Patriots still have Rob Gronkowski who finished the year with 1,176 yards and 11 touchdowns in 15 games, so Brady will feed him even more if Edelman is unable to go.
The Patriots also possess a solid defense that almost never gets mentioned because of the offense’s reputation. New England’s defense finished the regular season 9th in yards allowed and 10th in points allowed.
The Pats also surrendered just an average of 17 points per game over the last month of the season, one of the best in the NFL.
NFL Betting Trends:
- Chiefs are 6-3 ATS on the road.
- Chiefs are 6-1 ATS on the road vs. AFC.
- Patriots are 4-1-3 ATS at home.
- Patriots are 7-6-3 ATS this year.
- Chiefs are 9-8 ATS this year.
4* Free NFL Wild Card Betting Prediction: Under 43.5
Neither the Chiefs nor the Patriots will be 100 percent on offense with Jeremy Maclin dealing with an ankle injury for Kansas City, and New England unsure if Edelman will even play. Both teams also possess stout defenses, and defenses tend to play harder during the postseason as teams fight for every yard.
NFL Free Wild Card Score Prediction: New England 20- Kansas City 17
Like nearly every other game this postseason, I look for this game to be a hard-fought defensive battle as the Patriots best Kansas City and head to another AFC Championship game.
