The Chargers were a bit of a disappointment last night in primetime against the Chargers. After marching down field on the opening drive most people probably thought it was their night.
But that was the only touchdown they scored all evening. Kyle Shanahan and the 9ers made their adjustments and went to work, made mince meat of them afterwards in the run game and beat them 22-16.
Brandon Staley is a guy whose seat could potentially get hot if his game planning continues down this path. He’s obviously a smart guy, and as far as we can tell from reports and clips on the internet the guys seem to like him.
But he does make some puzzling decisions in game and this is obviously not a hot take it dates back to the Raiders game last season that cost them the playoffs.
So at some point his leash is going to get shorter.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs offence right now is the best in the NFL and there aren’t really any two ways about it. Not that they are far and away better than the Bills or Eagles, but they are better.
They’re 1st in points per game and 1st in TD’s per game, 1st in points per play, 2nd in 3rd down conversion rate and 2nd in 4th down conversion rate. This team is hummin’ right now.
I bet the Jags spread last week which was an obvious mistake but it’s because this defence still continues to struggle in every facet of the game. The Jags always find ways to shoot themselves in the foot and they closed the back door on themselves like they do every week.
Not to make excuses, but this Chiefs defence is still below average. They also have the third worst red zone defence in the NFL where they allow touchdowns to opponents 70% of the time.
This is concerning against the Chargers who have struggles of their own but can move the ball at will when they want too (hint hint).
Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers are battling the injury bug more than any other team in pro sports, on the planet. Literally.
I don’t have enough space in this article to list them all, so we’ll go through the key players missing and we’ll leave out the studs who are done for the year.
Christian Covington left the game last week and has the questionable tag for this one, he is absolutely crucial for the front seven that is also missing their nose tackle Austin Johnson, and Joey Bosa.
On offence they are still without Mike Williams and Keenan Allen is questionable for this one.
Now they still have the ability to move the ball obviously but they are just so banged up it’s hard to back them over the Chiefs who are mostly healthy and absolutely buzzing right now.
