The Panthers were in coasting mode this time last season but now they find themselves in survival mode.
The defending NFC Champs will host the red hot Kansas City Chiefs and will need to rediscover their defense from last season if they hope to win as home favorites.
Kansas City Chiefs
The next man up mentality in the backfield for the Chiefs has worked over the last few years with Knile Davis, Spencer Ware, and Charcandrick West all finding success in the absence of Jamaal Charles.
Last week, they were even able to put a win together without Alex Smith. Nick Foles led the way as the Chiefs used defense and ball control to knock off the Jaguars.
Smith is expected to return under center this week and likely benefitted from the extra time off. Smith was battling back from a concussion and was inactive last week – despite clearing the NFL’s concussion protocol.
The Chiefs are leading the NFL in turnover margin and that has been their recipe for winning. Their offense hasn’t been overly powerful and their defense hasn’t been as dominant as past years.
But, they have forced 20 turnovers and committed just 7. That should work well for Kansas City this week as the Carolina has turned the ball over the third most times in the NFL.
However, that reliance on turnovers can cause some issues if their opponent is able to protect the football. Expect the Chiefs front seven to be pressuring Cam Newton all day long and the hopes of forcing him into errant throws.
The makeup of this Chiefs team relies on their veterans to make the smart and clutch plays – something that has been very successful as Kansas City has won 16 of their last 18 regular season games.
The reigning NFC champions have yet to put a performance on the field that shows any resemblance of that honor.
The Panthers are 23rd in scoring defense and 9th in scoring offense – categories that they ranked 6th and 1st, respectively in 2015.
So while the offense has been relatively as good particularly if you throw out the time where Cam has been missing and their numbers are still solid, the defense though has been pretty bad.
A big reason for that has been their inability to create turnovers. In 2015, the Panthers forced a league leading 39 turnovers. This season through 8 games, they have forced just 11.
Newton has been under much more pressure too – the Panthers are 8th in the league in most sacks allowed after ranking 22nd in sacks allowed last season.
That could prove to be an issue again this week as the already solid Chiefs’ front seven could welcome back All-Pro pass rusher Justin Houston who is yet to play this regular season.
The key for Carolina will be neutralizing that pass rush by running the ball effectively and utilizing Greg Olsen and their receiving corps for short, easy throws.
NFL Betting Trends:
- Under is 9-4 in Kansas City’s last 13 non-conference games.
- Carolina is 11-7-1 ATS in their last 19 games following a SU win.
- Kansas City is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games as a road underdog.
- Carolina is 22-13-1 ATS as a home favorite since 2010.
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Carolina -3.0
I still think it is a long shot for Carolina to make the playoffs but this week will be a step in the right direction.
Their defense will have a chance to build off of last week’s strong performance against an offense that has limited weapons.
NFL Free Score Prediction: Carolina 24 – Kansas City 17
The Chiefs are due to stumble a bit after this incredible stretch they have put together. I like the Panthers to be better protecting the football even if their offense struggles through stretches of the game.
