The Indianapolis Colts will try to pick up their first win of the season as they’ll travel to the Music City on Sunday to take on the Tennessee Titans. These AFC South rivals are in the driver seats for taking the division this year as the Jaguars and Texans are both among the worst teams in the league.
Each team won on the road last year with Indianapolis taking the first meeting 34-17 in week 10 but the Titans quickly bounced back in week 12 and won in dominating fashion 45-26.
Indianapolis Colts
Indianapolis was given a tough beginning of the season schedule with the Seahawks and Rams coming to Lucas Oil Stadium. The Colts haven’t been able to win in front of their home crowd yet as they dropped a close one on Sunday 27-24.
The Rams hit a tiebreaking FG with 2:23 to play and the Colts couldn’t muster any production on their final 2 drives as the game as Carson Went sat out due to another injury. Wentz, currently dealing with sprained ankles, is uncertain on when he could return which is not good timing as the Colts embark on a three-game road trip to Tennessee, Miami and Baltimore.
Wentz was 20 of 31 with 247 yards, 1 TD and 1 interception. Jacob Eason, Wentz’s replacement, was intercepted by Jalen Ramsey on his second NFL throw which iced the game.
Tennessee Titans
Tennessee avoided a dreaded 0-2 start to their season with a stunning 33-30 OT win over the Seahawks on the road. The Titans picked up where they left off last week by looking sluggish on offense and generating no stops on defense.
The Seahawks grabbed a 24-9 lead going into the half and held a 30-16 lead early in the 4th quarter. Tennessee leaned on their All-Pro RB Derrick Henry who had a monster 2nd half to finish with a career-high 6 receptions for 55 yards and 182 yards rushing yards, matching the most allowed by Seattle during coach Pete Carroll’s tenure.
Ryan Tannehill was 27 for 40 for 347 yards and more importantly he looked much more in sync with Julio Jones who had his 59th career 100-yard game, finishing with 6 receptions for 128 yards.
Seattle had a 52 game winning streak at home when leading by 15+ points. The Seahawks also had 13 consecutive home debut wins entering Sunday.
Tennessee has a favorable schedule these next few weeks with a possible Wentz-less Colts, Jets, and Jaguars.
Tennessee had some big losses of the offensive side as starters WR Corey Davis and TE Jonnu Smith secured big paydays on the market as well as a surprising release of RT Dennis Kelly. Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith also left to take the Atlanta Falcons heading coach job. The Titans did trade for superstar WR Julio Jones from the Falcons to give the offense a dangerous 1-2 receiving duo with Jones and AJ Brown.
NFL Betting Trends:
- The Colts were 5-3 on the road in 2020
- The Titans were 5-3 at home in 2020
- These teams split their 2 meetings last season
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Titans ML
The Colts have had the Titans number in years past and always seem to come out on top against their AFC South rival. Last season, each of these teams won on the road in controlling fashion and eventually each made the playoffs.
These teams match up well identity wise as both like to control the clock and run the ball. Tennessee has a much more explosive offense but Indianapolis has one of the best defenses in the league and have had success before stifling the Titans.
The Colts are facing a key injury as QB Carson Wentz left last week late with sprained ankles and his availability for Sunday seems unlikely. That puts a lot of pressure on second year QB Jacob Eason to step in his first start on the road against a quality team.
Tennessee looked like themselves again in the second half on the road in Seattle and gutted out a gusty win in a hostile environment. That kind of win can build a lot of momentum for this team as they have a favorable schedule coming up.
I like the Titans to avenge their ugly home opening loss with a win on Sunday in front of their home crowd.
