The Indianapolis Colts head to Arrowhead Stadium for Sunday Night Football looking to bounce back from a 41-23 loss to Baltimore in their season opener. Shane Steichen’s club fell behind early and never recovered, while Andy Reid and Kansas City opened with a convincing 31-10 victory over Denver.
The Chiefs looked comfortable at home, particularly once Kenneth Walker got rolling. Indianapolis now gets the pleasant assignment of dealing with Walker and Patrick Mahomes one week after allowing Baltimore 506 total yards.
Giving up 41 points is one thing; following it with a trip to Arrowhead is another.
Recent meetings have produced some tight football, including Kansas City’s 23-20 win at Arrowhead last November. Indianapolis has also given the Chiefs problems in previous matchups, so this hasn’t always been the one-sided series the betting line might suggest.

Kansas City’s home-field advantage shows up clearly in the betting market. The Chiefs are laying 6.5 points with Indianapolis getting +6.5, while the total sits at 46.5 at most sportsbooks.
The previous meeting went Kansas City’s way, 23-20 at Arrowhead last November. That game finished with 43 points, and the last three meetings between these teams have stayed under the total.
Indianapolis allowed 506 yards in its 41-23 opening loss to Baltimore, including 304 through the air. Kansas City had a considerably better Week 1, beating Denver 31-10 while holding the Broncos to 176 total yards and only 61 on the ground.
Chiefs Stats
Kansas City opened its season with a 31-10 victory over Denver, and Walker immediately changed the look of the offense. He rushed for 173 yards and a touchdown in his Chiefs debut, while Mahomes threw for 184 yards and two scores.
The Chiefs finished with 392 total yards, including 220 on the ground. That balance gave Mahomes something Kansas City badly wanted this season: an offense that doesn’t require him to manufacture every important play himself.
Walker needed one game to make Kansas City’s new-look running attack considerably less theoretical.
Defensively, Kansas City was even better. The Chiefs allowed only 176 total yards and 10 points while recording four sacks, giving Steve Spagnuolo’s unit a strong opening statement.
There are some injury concerns entering Week 2, with the Chiefs carrying several names on the injury report.
Still, the Week 1 performance gave Kansas City plenty to like on both sides of the ball.
Colts Stats
Indianapolis has considerably more cleaning up to do after its 41-23 loss to Baltimore. The Colts produced 251 total offensive yards, with 149 through the air and another 102 coming on the ground.
Daniel Jones completed 19 passes for 166 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Jonathan Taylor was the brighter part of the afternoon, rushing for 98 yards and two touchdowns, while Alec Pierce contributed four catches for 61 yards.
The defensive numbers were considerably uglier.
Indianapolis surrendered 506 total yards and 41 points, including 304 yards through the air. The Colts recorded two sacks but failed to generate an interception, and Baltimore repeatedly found ways to extend drives and create explosive plays.
Indianapolis also enters Week 2 dealing with some injury concerns. The bigger issue, though, is getting a defense that struggled badly in the opener ready for Mahomes, Walker and a Kansas City offense coming off a 31-point night.

Colts vs. Chiefs QB Matchup
Patrick Mahomes enters Week 2 after throwing for 184 yards and two touchdowns against Denver. He didn’t need to carry the offense with Walker dominating on the ground, but Mahomes was efficient when Kansas City needed him and added another dimension with his mobility.
That’s the uncomfortable part for Indianapolis. Preparing for Mahomes is difficult enough without also having to account for a running game that just produced 220 yards.
Mahomes having a 173-yard rusher beside him isn’t exactly simplifying anyone’s defensive game plan.
Daniel Jones completed 19 passes for 166 yards with one touchdown and one interception against Baltimore. He had some productive moments, but Indianapolis spent too much of the game chasing the Ravens after falling behind.
Jones doesn’t need to match Mahomes highlight for highlight. He needs Taylor and the running game to keep Kansas City’s pass rush honest, avoid costly mistakes and give the Colts enough sustained drives to keep their defense off the field.
That becomes especially important against a Spagnuolo defense that produced four sacks and allowed only 176 yards in Week 1. Obvious passing situations at Arrowhead aren’t where Indianapolis wants to spend its Sunday night.
Indianapolis Colts vs. Kansas City Chiefs bottom line: Kansas City suddenly has a running game to complement Mahomes, while Indianapolis has one week to figure out where those 506 yards against Baltimore came from.

Kansas City showed a different gear with Walker carrying the ground game, which should keep Indianapolis from selling out against Mahomes. The Colts have Jonathan Taylor off 98 rushing yards and two touchdowns, giving them a way to sustain drives instead of putting everything on Daniel Jones. Indianapolis doesn’t need to trade touchdowns all night, but it does need to contribute.
Kansas City has enough answers even if the Colts start slowly.
Mahomes should find opportunities against a defense that surrendered 506 yards last week, while Walker gives the Chiefs another way to create explosive plays without throwing it 40 times. The obvious concern is Kansas City’s defense, which held Denver to 10 points and 176 yards.
Still, Baltimore showed Indianapolis can score after falling behind, and that game reached 64 points. I expect Kansas City to do most of the heavy lifting, with Indianapolis adding enough late.
