These two teams enter the 2025 season from completely different vantage points. Baltimore is a legit Super Bowl contender, eager to shake off recent playoff stumbles. Indianapolis? They’re just trying to claw their way back to relevance after four straight years without a postseason berth.
The quarterback contrast says it all. Lamar Jackson is the league’s most electric weapon under center. Anthony Richardson? He’s still trying to prove he belongs. We’re unlikely to see Jackson in this one, but Richardson could get some run — and that might be the most interesting thing about the Colts in August.
Historically, John Harbaugh’s Ravens are preseason killers. They’ve treated these games with a little more urgency than most teams. Does it matter in the big picture? Probably not. It’s more about structure and execution than scoreboard results. Either way, this franchise knows exactly what it has across the depth chart.
The Colts, on the other hand, need reps — and lots of them. There are holes on both sides of the ball, and Shane Steichen needs to show progress if he wants a long-term leash. Thankfully, he’s coaching in the AFC South — still the softest division in the NFL. That’s about the only break Indy gets this year.
Indianapolis Colts
Nothing will be decided in Week 1 of the preseason, but we might get a glimpse into the Colts’ quarterback plans. Ideally, they want Anthony Richardson to take the job and run with it. Realistically, early signs suggest Daniel Jones could be the Week 1 starter. That doesn’t inspire much regular-season confidence — but in the preseason, it might mean we see a more stable offensive showing.
Rookie tight end Tyler Warren is expected to be a big part of this offense down the line. However, don’t count on them showcasing much of him in the opener — no need to risk your top pick in August.
Ultimately, this game is more about live reps. Expect the Colts’ coaching staff to treat this as a tune-up for roster evaluation. Defensively, they’re aiming to be middle-of-the-pack when the season kicks off — and this is where that climb begins.
Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens are already dialed in. Lamar Jackson and the first-team offense don’t have much to prove, and they won’t be asked to do much here. Baltimore is more focused on staying healthy — especially after losing tight end Isaiah Likely for the rest of the preseason. That alone might make them even more cautious this week.
Behind Jackson, Cooper Rush and rookie Devin Leary are serviceable but won’t replicate the MVP-level dual threat. Then again, who can? Expect a simplified approach focused on clean execution and roster evaluation.
The real buzz, though, is on defense — specifically in the secondary. Baltimore addressed last year’s biggest weakness in a big way, and some scouts are calling it the best DB room in the league.
That won’t change the outcome of a preseason game, but it might make you think twice about a Ravens futures ticket.

It’s time for my Indianapolis Colts vs. Baltimore Ravens pick! The sportsbooks are calling this one a pick’em essentially. That makes some sense, and unfortunately it is not providing much in the way of value on either side.
Sometimes underdogs in the NFL Preseason can be worth some blind bets because at least the payoffs are positive, that is not the case here.
This is a rare case where I think the under is the best way to play it. A combination of “just getting started” sloppiness and style of play.
On the latter, I am referring to both teams preference for being methodical with their running game.
For Baltimore, that can include some explosiveness but Jackson is not going to play and the same is likely for their top playmakers in the backfield and on the perimeter.
Indy has questions at quarterback and while a lack of a clear starter could mean more run for Richardson or Jones, playing with their second tier offensive weapons is not very exciting.
