Houston was expected to be one of the worst teams in the NFL this year, but they played with energy and passion in a 37-21 win over the Jaguars in the season opener. The Texans look like a squad that thrives with a chip on their shoulder – well at least through one game.
The Browns are 0-1, but are still -12.5 favorites heading into week 2 after an impressive showing in Kansas City last Sunday. Cleveland was up on KC 22-10 at half and 29-20 into the 4th quarter, but the Chiefs did what the Chiefs do in a 33-29 win.
Houston Texans
The Houston QB situation is still in limbo with Deshaun Watson facing numerous civil suits, but Tyrod Taylor took advantage of the opportunity in going 21/33 for 291 and 2 TD. Taylor also added 40 yards rushing, and Mark Ingram looked like a workhorse in toting the rock 26 times for 85 yards.
The Texans offense will be a work in progress, and it didn’t hurt that they were playing a Jaguars defense that was 2nd worst in yards allowed and points scored against in 2020.
Houston has a big challenge against Baker Mayfield on Sunday considering they gave up 332 yards and 3 TD to another #1 pick in Jags’ QB Trevor Lawrence. The former Clemson star was also picked off three times, but his receivers didn’t do him any favors with numerous drops either.
Cleveland Browns
Cleveland played well in week one but ultimately couldn’t eat enough clock to keep the KC offense at bay. Patrick Mahomes had a 75 yard TD to Tyreek Hill a mere 14 seconds after a Kareem Hunt TD gave the Browns a 29-20 lead and the writing was on the wall for a Browns loss.
The Browns played well at Arrowhead, but are they going to be that much more dominant in their home opener to cover the near 2 TD spread? Mayfield was 21/28 for 321 yards, and Nick Chubb carried 15 times for 83 yards and a couple of TD.
The big question as to whether Cleveland can cover the -12.5 spread is if Houston is as good as they looked in week 1 or the Jaguars are just that bad? The Browns showed they are going to be a contender in the AFC playoff picture, holding the Chiefs to 73 yards rushing on 23 carries, but ultimately giving up 337 and 3 TD to Patrick Mahomes.

4* Free Week 2 NFL Betting Prediction: Texans +12.5
The line seems about 5 or 6 points too high after Houston played surprisingly well last Sunday in Urban Meyer’s debut for Jacksonville. It turns out the Texans have a nice core of running backs, a revamped offensive line, and a hungry QB in Taylor who only lost his job with the Chargers last season due to a trainer accidentally puncturing his lung.
