Is this the week the Lions finally break into the win column? Detroit is on the road, but if you have to play away from home going up against a Chicago team that allowed 9 sacks last week isn’t a bad option. The betting public likes the Lions, with the +4 point open already down to +3 and dropping.
Bears coach Matt Nagy could legitimately be coaching for his job on Sunday, with a loss likely to seal his fate in the Windy City. It’s not without due cause though, as this offense has been one of the worst in the NFL over the last two years when Nagy is calling the plays.
Detroit Lions
Sunday’s game really could come down to which team wants it less and to be fair Detroit has looked much better than Chicago this year despite being 0-3. The Lions fought back to within 41-33 against the 49ers, were up 17-14 at the half against Green Bay, and lost just 19-17 last week against Baltimore.
While it certainly looks like Detroit has been involved in some close games lately, they were also down 41-17 at one point against San Francisco and got outscored 21-0 in the 2nd half against the Packers. The Lions did have a win in the books last week until a record breaking 66-yard field goal by Justin Tucker gave the Ravens a 2 point win.
So what does Detroit do against the Bears? The Lions defense held one of the best running teams in the NFL, Baltimore, to 116 yards on 22 carries last week. Lamar Jackson was just 16/31 passing as well, so Chicago QB Justin Fields has his work cut out for him in just his 2nd NFL start.
Chicago’s defense has played well the last two weeks which will put Jared Goff under the microscope in this matchup. Goff completed 22 of 30 passes last week and has shown a formidable hold of the offense with a 72.5% completion percentage the last two weeks.
Chicago Bears
This one all comes down to whether Nagy gets a bit more creative with his play calling in Fields’ second NFL start? That was not the case last week, with the Browns absolutely dominating the Bears offensive line to the tune of 9 sacks. Myles Garret had 4-1/2 of those, but Charles Harris leads Detroit with just 2 sacks this season.
Fields was just 6 for 20 passing last week for 68 yards and with no threat of a passing game the Bears were also held to 46 yards rushing in a 26-6 loss to the Browns. Cleveland controlled the ball to the tune of a 40 to 20 time of possession advantage.
The Bears defense has played well, but they can only keep this team in the game for so long before offensive ineptitude eventually dooms them. Chicago got 5 sacks on Baker Mayfield last week and force a rare 3-interception game from Joe Burrow in the 17-14 win over the Bengals in week 2.
NFL Betting Trends:
- Lions are 1-4 ATS last 5 road games
- Lions are 1-3-1 ATS last 5 in Chicago
- OVER is 6-1 in Lions last 7 vs. NFC North
- Bears are 3-8 ATS last 11 games in October
- Bears 1-4 ATS last 5 vs. NFC North
4* Free Week 4 NFL Betting Prediction: Lions +3
This is a matchup of two teams going in the opposite direction in terms of management. The Lions are eager to get their first win under coach Dan Campbell while Nagy has lost the room in Chicago and could easily be one loss away from getting canned.
Fields will have the usual growing pains of a rookie QB and might not even make it through the game if the offensive line plays like they did last week against Cleveland. Nick Foles would be the 3rd stringer, but his better days are behind him.
