The Chargers started slowly in Oakland but ended up whipping up on the lowly Raiders. Meanwhile, Denver rested for the week on its bye.
Both teams face off in Week 11 as the Chargers try to continue their march toward the playoffs.
Broncos’ center Matt Paradis had never missed a snap in fifty-six games as an NFL lineman until last week when he fractured his fibula against the Texans.
Denver lost that game, its third narrow defeat in four, including a three-point loss to the Rams and touchdown defeat to the Chiefs.
That was, of course, their first game without Demaryius Thomas after the receiver, who was drafted by Denver in 2010, was traded away for Houston.
The Broncos have lost six of their last seven and are looking at the possibility of going 1–9 over a ten-game stretch for just the third time in the last thirty years. Denver did go 0–8 during a stretch last season.
With the offensive line banged up and the season lost, the Broncos don’t figure to be much of a threat against the Chargers.
Los Angeles Chargers
Oakland used a fake punt to sustain its first quarter drive that chewed up half of the period. The Raiders stalled on the goal line, however, which set the tone for the rest of the afternoon.
LA’s defense dominated in a 20–6 win, allowing just two field goals and limiting Oakland’s receivers to under fifty-three yards each.
Rivers got off to a slow start as well but he finished the day with 223 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns. Much of that total came on a short little slip pass for Melvin Gordon, who took it over sixty yards to the house.
Only five Charger receivers caught passes, including Antonio Gates, who caught just one ball and Virgil Green, who caught two. Only Keenan Allen (six catches) and Tyrell Williams (four catches) did much for the wide receiver team. Mike Williams continued to be either boom or bust and didn’t record a catch.
The defense sacked the quarterback four times and, perhaps most importantly, the place kicking didn’t miss either of the two field goal opportunities. Michael Badgley hit both his chances.
LA sits a loss behind KC in the AFC West standings with one more head-to-head matchup. This will be the first time it plays Denver this season, with the second matchup set for Week 17.
