Cowboys vs. Texans Gameday
Week 4 sends the Dallas Cowboys across Texas for a Sunday afternoon matchup with the Houston Texans. Brian Schottenheimer’s Cowboys enter at 1-2, while DeMeco Ryans and the Texans are still hunting for their first win at 0-3.
Both teams were handed painful losses last Sunday.
Dallas rallied to tie Baltimore in the closing seconds before a 56-yard FG gave the Ravens a 34-31 win. Houston also lost at the wire, falling 19-17 in Indianapolis after the Colts kicked the winning FG with 21 seconds remaining.
Both teams arrive off last-second losses, but Dallas has shown considerably more offensive punch through three weeks.
That sets up an interesting contrast in Houston. The Cowboys have shown they can score with good offenses, while the Texans have spent much of September trying to turn solid stretches into points.
Something has to give Sunday, and Houston’s urgency at home should only add to it.

Dallas Cowboys vs. Houston Texans Odds & Last 5
The opening odds have Houston favored at home, with the Texans -145 on the moneyline and Dallas +121. Houston is laying 2.5 points, while the total is 48.
That total puts the offensive contrast between these teams front and center.
Dallas has scored at least 31 points in consecutive games, beating Washington before losing a shootout to Baltimore. The Cowboys have shown they can trade points when a game opens up.
Houston has gone the other direction.
The Texans followed a 36-31 opening loss to Buffalo with a 20-6 loss to Cincinnati and last week’s two-point defeat in Indianapolis. Their offense has reached 20 points only once through three games.
Houston won the most recent head-to-head meeting 34-10 in Dallas during the 2024 season. That’s the only meeting between these teams since Dallas won 27-23 in 2022.

Texans Stats From Last Week
Houston’s offense managed only 223 total yards in Indianapolis, including 56 on the ground. The Texans ran just 51 offensive plays and held the ball for less than 25 minutes.
C.J. Stroud completed 16 of 27 passes for 167 yards and a TD. Houston didn’t turn the football over, but it still struggled to generate sustained offense.
The Texans did make a late push.
Woody Marks scored from a yard out with 1:50 remaining to give Houston a 17-16 lead, only for Indianapolis to answer with the winning FG.
Houston’s defense did enough to keep the game within reach. The Texans allowed 300 yards, forced three turnovers and held Jonathan Taylor to 68 rushing yards on 23 carries.
The Week 4 injury report is worth watching.
Azeez Al-Shaair, British Brooks and Trent Brown did not practice Wednesday. Will Anderson Jr., Calen Bullock, Jadeveon Clowney, Nico Collins, Logan Hall, Jake Hansen, Ed Ingram, Dalton Schultz and M.J. Stewart were limited, while Wade Woodaz practiced fully.
Cowboys Stats From Last Week
Dallas produced 415 yards against Baltimore, but that still wasn’t enough to escape Rio with a win.
Dak Prescott completed 25 of 40 passes for 276 yards and a TD without throwing an interception. CeeDee Lamb finished with 112 receiving yards, while George Pickens added 82.
The running game finally gave Dallas something substantial as well.
Javonte Williams rushed for 98 yards and a TD, helping the Cowboys finish with 148 yards on the ground. It was their first 100-yard rushing performance of the season.
Dallas still couldn’t get enough stops.
Baltimore averaged 6.5 yards per play and rushed for 192 yards. The Cowboys have now allowed 82 points through three games, leaving the defense with plenty to clean up before facing Stroud.
Dallas also has defensive injuries to monitor. Cobie Durant, DeMarvion Overshown and Shavon Revel Jr. did not practice Wednesday, while Malik Hooker was limited.
Cowboys vs. Texans QB Matchup
Dak Prescott has given Dallas plenty of production through three weeks.
Prescott has thrown for 730 yards with 7 TD’s and only 1 interception. His ability to distribute the football to Lamb, Pickens and the rest of the Cowboys’ weapons has kept this offense dangerous through three weeks.
C.J. Stroud’s season has been much more frustrating.
Stroud has thrown for 794 yards with 3 TD’s and no interceptions, but Houston hasn’t consistently turned that production into points. The Texans have struggled to finish enough of their drives despite Stroud taking care of the football.

That lack of turnovers matters against Dallas.
The Cowboys’ defense has given up plenty of yardage, so Houston doesn’t need Stroud forcing throws in search of instant offense. Longer possessions and better finishing around the red zone would go a long way toward changing the Texans’ scoring profile.
Prescott faces a different challenge against a Houston defense that has generally kept games manageable. His job is to keep Dallas attacking without giving the Texans easy opportunities to shorten the field.
Dallas Cowboys vs. Houston Texans bottom line: Prescott gives Dallas the proven scoring punch, while Stroud gets a matchup that offers Houston a chance to turn yards into considerably more points.
Dallas Cowboys vs. Houston Texans Football Betting Trends
- The Cowboys have an impressive record in over/under for away games, going 6-0-1 in their last 7 regular season games.

- Houston has performed well straight up in all games, securing a 9-3 record in their last 12 regular season games.
- Also, the Texans have been reliable at home, going 5-2 straight up in their last 7 regular season games.
- Houston’s over/under record after a win stands at 4-1 in their last 5 regular season games.
Cowboys Texans Free Pick: Over 48
Here is my Cowboys Texans free pick: I’m taking Over 48. Dallas has enough offense to do its share, and its defense has been generous enough that Houston shouldn’t need a perfect afternoon to finally put together a respectable scoring day.
The Cowboys moved the ball for more than 400 yards against Baltimore and showed some life on the ground, which gives them another way to pressure a Houston defense dealing with several injuries. On the other side, C.J. Stroud gets a Dallas defense that has struggled badly to keep opponents from moving the football.
Dallas can push the pace here, and Houston finally gets a matchup where its offense should have room to respond.
Houston’s first three games haven’t exactly been an Over bettor’s dream, but I’m more interested in this matchup than those final scores. Dallas has enough weapons to force the Texans out of their shell, and Houston protecting the football gives it a chance to sustain drives instead of giving possessions away.
I see both QB’s having opportunities against vulnerable areas of these D’s, with the Boys carrying the bigger scoring ceiling. Give me Over 48.
