The Jets and Browns each failed to make the playoffs last season and they face each other in the season opener with the Jets as the 3-point betting favorite.
Each team has big question marks at the starting QB position with a couple of veterans getting the nod in Cleveland Josh McCown and New York’s Ryan Fitzpatrick.
McCown had a terrible season in Tampa Bay last season and he will be on a short leash with Johnny Manziel ready to take the field. Fitzpatrick was handed the starting job for the first few weeks when Gino Smith was lost because of an injury in a locker room fight in the preseason.
These 2 teams met last in the 2013 season in New York with the Jets beating the Browns 24-13.
At least the Browns have a solid offensive line and McCown will have time to find his targets.
However, Cleveland has a less than stellar WR corps. Brian Hartline and Dwayne Bowe are the top 2 WR’s and last season Hartline had only 474 yards with 2 TD with the Dolphins and while Bowe had 754 yards he had 0 TD.
Isaiah Crowell, Terrance West, and rookie Duke Johnson will be the trio shouldering the rushing offense for the Browns and look for Cleveland to try to establish the run.
The Jets were one of the best teams in the league last season in run defense, but they will miss the suspended DL Sheldon Richardson.
New York ranked 14th in the league last season in pass defense, but may be much better this season with off-season addition Darrelle Revis. He and Antonio Cromartie will make McCown think about going downfield with the ball, as the Browns cannot turn the ball over in this game.
The Browns were only 1-3 in preseason play and with a less than dynamic offense they may need to lean on their defense in this game.
New York Jets
Fitzpatrick has a couple of solid weapons in the WR combo of Erik Decker, who led the Jets in catches and receiving yards last season, and off-season addition Brandon Marshall. Cleveland has a solid pass defense led by Joe Haden and new acquisition Tramon Williams and last season the Browns ranked 2nd in the NFL in INT.
Cleveland ranked dead last in the league last season in run defense and Chris Ivory and Zac Stacy lead a New York rushing offense that was the 3rd best in the NFL last season.
With both teams looking to establish the run the Jets have the advantage on the front with the issues the Browns have against the run.
The Texans were 2-2 in preseason play.
