Washington seems like a strange -5 point favorite coming into Friday night’s week 2 of preseason action. The “Football Team” lost their exhibition opener 22-13 to New England last week, with their backup defense being a huge liability vs. the Patriots.
Cincinnati on the other hand beat the defending champion Buccaneers 19-14 to kick off their preseason. Zac Taylor was 1-3 in his first and only preseason in 2019, so he apparently wants to establish the winning mentality in year three.
Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals managed just 1 TD in their preseason opener, but did put together 4 scoring drives that ended in a field goal. Joe Burrow didn’t take any snaps vs. the Patriots, and might not get under center until week 1 of the regular season.
Cincinnati is trying to see what they have behind Burrow, and Brandon Allen was solid going 7 for 10 against Tampa Bay. The Bengals showed a dedication to the passing game, as Kyle Shurmur close out the game going 12 for 19. Neither QB had a TD, and both threw INTs.
Neither Allen or Shurmur have a ton of NFL experience (Allen did start 5 games last season), but the Bengals showed an ability to run the ball last week. Jacque Patrick carried the ball 15 times for 71 yards, and Chris Evans had a 1-yard plunge for Cincinnati’s only TD of the game.
One big advantage the Bengals may have on Friday night is a run defense that held the Bucs to 29 yards on 17 carries last week. Washington really tried to open things up offensively in their opener, so making WFT one-dimensional is a great route for Cincinnati.
Washington Football Team
Washington only managed 13 points in the loss to the Patriots last week, but they did put up some solid offensive numbers. WFT is going with Ryan Fitzpatrick as the starter this year, but Ron Rivera wants to see what he has behind the 38 year old.
Fitzpatrick went 5 for 8 in the opener as he tries to learn a new offense, and last year’s unsung hero Taylor Heinicke went 9 for 15 in his snaps. Steven Montez looked good completing 17 of 24 passes with a TD and an INT, and WFT is supposedly going to try working Kyle Allen into the mix in Friday night’s game.
WFT will need to shore up their run defense, at least towards the back end of the depth chart. Patriots rookie Rhamondre Stevenson had a couple of 4th quarter rushing TDs last week, including a 91-yard scamper with just over a minute left in the game.
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Football Team -5
This one could come down to a test of will for each defense. The Bengals gave up 14 points to Tampa Bay last week, 7 of which came off a pick six in the 4th quarter. Washington went into the 4th quarter down 9-7 last week before giving up a big 90+ yard TD late.
The only thing iffy about the total of 35 is that both teams have every reason to air things out for all four quarters. Cincinnati needs to find out what they have for QB depth in case Burrow isn’t fully healthy after last year’s injury and Washington is trying to narrow their depth chart down between 4 signal callers.
