It’s the Cincinnati Bengals vs. Philadelphia Eagles up next! The Eagles enter this preseason fresh off a Super Bowl title — and while history says repeating is a brutal task, there’s no denying this roster is built to contend again. The offense remains stacked, and losing coordinators has become part of the routine in Philly.
Meanwhile, Cincinnati’s mission is clear: get back to the big game. Since 2020, only the Bengals and Chiefs have carried the AFC banner into the Super Bowl. Offensively, they’ve done their part. But the defense? It’s been a louder-than-usual offseason, filled with turnover and question marks.
Both teams feature elite talent, though you won’t see much (if any) of Jalen Hurts, Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, or Saquon Barkley in this one. Preseason rules apply.
Still, because both franchises operate with clear offensive identities and continuity under center, there’s reason to believe we’ll get a decent look at some second-string playmakers on Thursday night. Don’t expect fireworks, but don’t expect a complete slog either.
Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals are as top-heavy as it gets on offense — and that’s not a knock when you’ve got arguably the best QB/WR duo in the league. Still, there’s solid depth behind Joe Burrow, which matters in a preseason setting like this.
Jake Browning saw extended action a couple of years ago and knows the system well enough to keep things on schedule. Behind him, Desmond Ridder adds a veteran presence who won’t panic in the pocket. Neither guy is flashy, but both are capable of running this offense effectively.
Because of that, Cincinnati should be able to move the ball — even if the starters are watching from the sideline. And with a defense that’s shaky even when the first-teamers are on the field, they’ll likely need to put up points just to stay in it. Yes, even in August.
Philadelphia Eagles
Nick Sirianni has had a phenomenal run in Philly. Two Super Bowl appearances in three years — including last season’s win — speak for themselves. But heading into this preseason, it’s clear this roster isn’t quite as deep as it once was.
That drop-off will show up more in August than in January. The backups behind Jalen Hurts don’t bring the same dual-threat upside, and they won’t be working with Philly’s usual arsenal of weapons. Without those top-tier playmakers, the offense could look clunky early on.
Defensively, it’s a similar story. The Eagles have had to let go of reliable depth pieces as guys got paid — the price of doing business in the modern NFL.
There’s no panic in August, but if you’re an Eagles fan, there’s at least some reason to raise an eyebrow.

Margins are always thin in the preseason — and this one’s no different. But for me, it comes down to Cincinnati’s offense. Sure, Burrow walking into Philly in November is a whole different conversation, but that’s not what we’re handicapping here.
On Thursday, I’m backing the Bengals to steal a road win by leaning on steady, experienced quarterback play. Jake Browning and Desmond Ridder aren’t pushing Burrow for his job — but they don’t need to.
They just need to keep the offense moving, avoid big mistakes, and finish a couple drives. That’s very much in play.
Philly’s coaching staff is sharp, and they’ll scheme things up — but this isn’t a group that’s going to empty the playbook in Week 1 of preseason. Especially not with a new offensive system being installed.
Kevin Patullo’s now calling the shots after Kellen Moore left for the Saints, and transitions like that can get a little bumpy.
Neither defense figures to dial up the pressure, which should lead to clean pockets and scoring chances. All told, that setup favors Cincinnati. Give me the Bengals to get it done.
