Joe Burrow looked to show no ill effects from last year’s torn ACL, leading the Bengals to a somewhat surprising 27-24 victory over the visiting Minnesota Vikings last week as +3 point home underdogs. Burrow and the high powered Cincy offense head to the Windy City as +3 point ‘dogs once again in week 2.
The Bears aren’t a bad team to fade in week 2 considering their locker room already seems in disarray. Marquise Goodwin made comments about Chicago’s 34-14 loss to the Rams on Sunday night wondering why the Bears didn’t have any routes past 10 yards and Matt Nagy seems in over his head trying to juggle the Andy Dalton / Justin Fields QB controversy.
Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals beat a really good Vikings team in week 1. Minnesota was getting a lot of key cogs back on defense and they had a 1500 yard rusher and a couple solid WRs last year. There were some who thought the Vikings pass rush would fluster Burrow in his first regular season game back from injury but the second year QB shined.
Burrow was 20/27 for 261 yards and 2 TD and 0 INT in week 1. Ja’Marr Chase, who was plagued by drops in the preseason, finished with 5 catches for 101 yards while Tee Higgins added 58 yards and a score as well. All of this came against a veteran Vikings secondary that features Patrick Peterson and Harrison Smith – the Bears might have the worst defensive backfield in the league.
Cincinnati also got their running game going last week against a revamped Minnesota defensive line. Joe Mixon carried the ball 29 times for 127 yards in week one, bouncing back nicely after playing just six games last season.
Cincinnati did show some weaknesses on defense, allowing Kirk Cousins to throw for 351 yards and 2 TD while Adam Thielen had 9 catches and 2 TD through the air. The Bengals did do a great job of shutting down Dalvin Cook though (20 carries, 61 yards) and if Chicago can’t run they don’t have a chance.
Chicago Bears
Chicago had a tough assignment in the season opener, heading to SoFi Stadium for the first game with full capacity fans and in front of a national audience for Sunday Night Football. There was no upset on the cards, as the Bears went into the half down 13-7 but were outmuscled in a 34-14 loss.
Where to being when discussing the Bears’ deficiencies in week 1? You have to start with the defense, which allowed Matthew Stafford to go 20/26 for 321 yards and 3 TD in his Rams debut. Burrow has to be licking his chops seeing those numbers, as the Bears secondary looks as bad as advertised.
The Bears defense has a lot of questions, but they may pale in comparison to what is going on with the offense. Andy Dalton was 27/38 on Sunday night which looks good on paper, but it was a largely conservative game plan avoiding Aaron Donald and not spending too much time in the pocket.
David Montgomery also had a great 1st week, running 16 times for 108 yards. The fact that he had that many yards and still only had 16 carries is just a testament to Matt Nagy’s play calling though – he doesn’t like to run the ball even if it’s successful.
NFL Betting Trends:
- Bengals are 6-2 ATS vs. team with a losing record
- Bengals are 36-17-2 ATS last 55 in September
- Bears are 3-7 ATS last 10 overall
- Bears are 1-5 ATS last 6 as a favorite
- Bears are 0-4 ATS last 4 vs team with a winning record
4* Free Week 2 NFL Betting Prediction: Bears -3
Chicago, or more importantly Nagy, isn’t going to like playing on their home field in this one. Chicago has a bona fide QB controversy going on and either Andy Dalton tears things up against his former squad Cincinnati or the crowd boos him off the field and the Bears turn to Justin Fields, the former Ohio State QB who had a TD run on Sunday night.
