Chicago coach Matt Nagy has decided Andy Dalton is ready to be QB1 for the regular season opener at the Rams, and is going to heed the fans’ clamors in going with Justin Fields for as much as a half in Saturday night’s contest with the Titans. Nagy even hinted at some starters seeing (somewhat) extended playing time as well.
It makes sense the Titans are +3 point home underdogs on Saturday. They do have 9 staff personnel in COVID protocol including QB Ryan Tannehill, head coach Mike Vrabel, and special teams coach Craig Aukerman. That being said, the Titans are trying to close out a perfect 3-0 preseason so all hands on deck.
Chicago Bears
This one’s all about Fields for Chicago, but it’s kind of a catch 22. If the rookie out of Ohio State plays well, it’ll take about 4 snaps into the season opener in L.A before fans call for Dalton to be benched. If he plays bad (or is handcuffed by play calling hint hint) it looks like the right call to play Dalton.
Make no mistake, when the reins are off Fields he has looked good this preseason. The #11 pick was 14/20 for 142 and ran for another 33 yards and a score to lead a comeback win over the Dolphins in week 1. He was 9/19 for 80 yards vs. Buffalo last week, but also ran for another 48.
Another interesting situation with Dalton sitting and Fields likely only getting the first half of play is that former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles could come in to wipe things up in the 2nd half vs. Tennessee’s backups. Does Chicago open up the playbook in one final trade showcase for the veteran?
Chicago may also not just open up the playbook late by choice on Saturday, it could be out of necessity as this defense is a far cry from the Monsters of the Midway. Sure it’s the preseason, but this Bears secondary is an issue after getting torched for 221 yards by former teammate Mitch Trubisky last week as Buffalo took a 34-6 lead into the half.
Tennessee Titans
Tennessee moves on in Saturday’s game without Vrabel and Auckerman, and also without Tannehill who wouldn’t get a huge benefit from playing anyways. For some reason, it still doesn’t seem like the Titans should be underdogs though.
Former OC Arthur Smith is off to be the head coach of the Falcons, but he seems like he’s left the offense in good hands in Todd Downing. So far this preseason the Titans have beaten the Falcons 23-3 and then dominated the Buccaneers 34-3 last weekend.
It’s dumb to see Derrick Henry take even one carry in the preseason, and Tannehill can’t play because of COVID. That doesn’t seem like a huge problem though because the QB combo of Matt Barkley and Logan Woodside have combined for 5 TD and 0 INT in two games.
The weird thing about Tennessee dominating opponents by the score of 57-6 so far this exhibition season is that both of their games have been road tilts so far. A Saturday night in Nashville may have Fields and the Bears offense a little shook, rattled, and ultimately rolled.
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Titans +3
Sure the Titans are without a couple coaches, but that almost gives them an advantage because it’s an early audition for Downing and the rest of the staff. Downing is 41 and DC Shane Bowen is 34 and that’s the type of youth that preaches win at all costs.
