The Rams are over a TD favorite when they kick off their 2021 campaign at home against Chicago on Sunday Night Football. The Rams were 10-6 a season ago, but have even bigger hopes for this year after swapping Jared Goff for Matthew Stafford in the offseason.
Chicago has changed at the QB position as well, and even for as much as the fans want to see rookie Justin Fields under center, Matt Nagy is going with Andy Dalton at least to start the season opener. Do the Bears still have the defense to keep this one competitive?
Chicago Bears
The 33-year-old Dalton takes the reins of a Chicago offense that ranked 26th in total yards last season. The Bears have moved on from Mitch Trubisky even though the young QB showed some signs of life late last year posting 30+ points in four of the last five games of the season.
Dalton had 14 TD to 8 INT last year in Dallas, but most think its only a matter of time before the team turns to #11 pick Justin Fields. The former Ohio State QB looked great in the preseason, going 30 of 49 with 2 TD and 0 INT while also running for 92 yards and a score.
Dalton seems like he’ll be a sitting duck behind one of the Bears biggest weaknesses – their offensive line. Chicago has some good skill position players led by Allen Robinson who had 1250 yards receiving last year and David Montgomery who had 1,070 on the ground.
Can Chicago’s defense keep them in this one? The defense is aging, but new coordinator Sean Desai brings an energy that he hopes to reinvigorate this group. Khalil Mack still needs to be gameplanned against, Akiem Hicks is a solid force in the middle, and the team also gets Eddie Goldman back in the trenches after opting out of 2020.
Los Angeles Rams
The Bears biggest defensive liability this season is going to be their secondary, which has Stafford licking his chops ahead of his L.A debut. The former Detroit QB threw for 402 and 297 in two games vs. the Bears last season, with 4 TD and 2 INT.
How will Stafford and offensive mastermind Sean McVay mesh? McVay seemed a bit handcuffed by Jared Goff’s regression, but now gets a 12-year veteran to open up the playbook with. The 33-year-old Stafford is still playing well too, throwing for 4000+ yards last year with 26 TD to 10 INT.
The Rams had the #1 defense in the NFL last season, ranking 1st in total yards, passing yards, and points allowed while coming in 3rd in rush yards given up. With that success comes some loss as defensive coordinator Brandon Staley is off to the Chargers, but the Rams likely won’t miss a beat with Raheem Morris taking those duties.
Morris has head coaching experience with Tampa Bay and Atlanta, and how good do you really have to be when you have Aaron Donald on your team? Donald as well as former Bears first rounder Leonard Floyd are going to wreak havoc on this Chicago offensive line.

4* Free Week 1 NFL Betting Prediction: Rams -7.5
Chicago’s offense showed some signs of life once Nagy gave up the play calling duties last season – so of course he takes them back to start the 2021 campaign. Nagy gives up on the run early, which is going to get Dalton killed on Sunday night. Expect a lot of 3-yard passes that turn into 3 and outs for the Bears, in turn putting their defense on the field for a majority of the game. This one gets ugly.
