Could Sunday’s Bears at Raiders game be a trap play? Most people would assume Las Vegas would be at least a TD favorite when they host Chicago even though LV is on a short week with a loss to the Chargers on Monday and the Bears evened up their record to 2-2 with a win last Sunday.
The Bears looked good in a 24-14 win in week 4, but that was also against winless Detroit. It’s tough for Chicago to go on the road as they’ve lost by 40 combined points in their two games away from Soldier Field this season – but both of the Raiders’ home wins have also required OT.
Chicago Bears
Even though his QB rating of 82.7 might not show it, Bears rookie QB Justin Fields was slinging it last week with Darnell Mooney and Allen Robinson combining for 188 yards receiving. Chicago had 373 yards of total offense which is a far cry from the 47 yards they put up in the 26-6 loss to Cleveland in week 3.
Chicago switched play callers last week with Bill Lazor at the helm, and the change was evident as the Bears were able to rush for 188 yards vs. the Lions. Fields got his first win as a starter in the NFL, yet still coach Matt Nagy has stated the team will return to Andy Dalton if he’s healthy. If the Bears go to Dalton, that means Nagy goes back to calling plays (for some reason).
The Bears offense will not only take a hit if Nagy takes back over the play calling, but they’ll also be without David Montgomery for 4-6 weeks after he suffered a sprained knee against the Lions. That’s a huge loss, as Montgomery was currently 5th in the NFL with 309 yards on the ground.
What the Bears do have is the defense to keep them in this game. The Raiders have the 2nd best passing attack in the NFL (326.0 ypg) but Chicago also leads the NFL in sacks with 15. Robert Quinn and Khalil Mack have combined for 8.5 of those coming in hard from the outside.
Las Vegas Raiders
The city of Las Vegas has a lot of magic shows, and now it’s time to figure out if the Raiders are for real or a mirage? The 3-0 start was impressive, but also required OT wins at home against Baltimore (33-27) and Miami (31-28) as well as a win on the road against a beat up Pittsburgh squad (26-17).
The Raiders are also at the disadvantage of playing on a short week after Monday night’s 28-14 loss to the Chargers as +3 point underdogs. That was the first time the LV offense looked human this season, as Derek Carr had just 196 yards after throwing for 380+ in the first three games of the season.
Chicago losing Montgomery is definitely a big blow for Sunday afternoon’s matchup as the Raiders gave up 117 yards on just 15 carries to Charger RB Austin Ekeler on MNF. Las Vegas has the #23 rush defense in the league (132.3) so we will see if former division rival Damian Williams (former Chief) can step into the lead back role for the Bears.

4* Free Week 5 NFL Betting Prediction: Bears +5.5
This is a strictly contrarian play because the Raiders seem like they should be at least a TD favorite in this one. Nagy always has the potential to sabotage any Bears game though by putting Dalton back in and reinstalling himself as play caller. Montgomery being out is also a big blow for Chicago.
All that being said, the Raiders are still on the short week and are facing arguably the best pass rushing duo in the NFL through three weeks in Quinn and Mack.
