One of the more interesting matchups on the NFL’s week 4 slate is the undefeated Carolina Panthers going on the road as +5 point underdogs to face the 2-1 Dallas Cowboys. Carolina is without Christian McCaffrey, but Dallas is also on the short week after beating Philadelphia on Monday night.
This is a legitimacy game for both teams. Two of the three Panthers’ wins have come against the Jets and Texans who are supposed to be the bottom feeders of the league in 2021. Dallas stakes their claim as contenders after beating the Chargers on the road and losing just 31-29 at Tampa Bay in the season opener.
Carolina Panthers
The loss of the ultra-versatile McCaffrey definitely hurts Carolina, as he had 187 all-purpose yards in the season opening win against the Jets and had another 137 total in beating the Saints 26-7 in week 2. Rookie Chuba Hubbard ran for 52 yards last week after McCaffrey left with an injured hamstring.
Matt Rhule and Joe Brady have a week to incorporate Hubbard into the game plan, and on the bright side Sam Darnold is playing with a ton of confidence through three games. Darnold is hitting nearly 70% of his passes in this offense with only 1 INT which is huge for Carolina.
Sunday’s game could turn into a shootout and the betting total of 50.5 would indicate as much. Dallas gave up a 320+ yard game to Jalen Hurts on Monday so Darnold and his weapons of DJ Moore, Terrace Marshall, Jr., and Robbie Anderson should be poised to explode.
The Panthers defense is going to have their hands full as well, and the major reason they are the #1 unit in the league through three games is because they’ve played rookie QB Zach Wilson and rookie QB Davis Webb in two of their three games.
Dallas Cowboys
Dak Prescott looks healthy which has the Cowboys back on top of their game. Prescott looked in full command of this offense on Monday night, completing 21 of 26 passes for 238 yards and 3 TD. That is coming off a 23/27 passing game in the win over the Chargers giving Prescott an 83% completion rate over the last two.
Prescott’s precision through the air has helped open up the Dallas running game, as they compiled 198 on the ground in the week 2 win over the Chargers and 160 on Monday night vs. the Eagles. The Cowboys are top 5 in total yards and rushing yards through three weeks.
This is a game that features a lot of weapons, and the Cowboys have a nice two headed backfield of Zeke Elliott and Tony Pollard that both have 180+ rushing yards this season. Both teams wide receivers cancel each other out, so the Dallas advantage in the running game looks like it could be the x-factor here.

4* Free Week 4 NFL Betting Prediction: Cowboys -5
Do the Panthers get exploited here? Carolina has had a very easy go of it with wins over Houston and the Jets as well as facing New Orleans at home. You can only beat the teams that are put in front of you, but at the same time this 3-0 record just doesn’t seem legit for Darnold and Company.
Dallas on the other hand has faced Tampa Bay and had to go to the West Coast to play the Chargers while also beating a division rival on Monday night football. Carolina may be overrated, and it’s possible that Dallas is underrated despite sitting atop the NFC East.
