This matchup features the Carolina Panthers out of the NFC South and the Cleveland Browns out of the AFC North. Neither team is having a season to remember, so this game could be more for draft position than actually toward the playoff push.
The last meeting between these two teams was back in 2014. The Carolina Panthers won this game 17-13. Cleveland has obviously improved since then, so this game has the potential to be a good one.
The Panthers played started the first half of the season 6-2 and were looking to be a strong playoff contender. Things took a turn when they travel to Pittsburgh on a Thursday night and were obliterated 21-52. Since then they lost a nail bitter to Detroit after failing on a two-point conversion. Then they lost to Seattle and this past weekend they lost to Tampa Bay after a very poor performance from Cam Newton.
During their four game losing streak, the Panthers are averaging 21 points per game. This is slightly lower than their normal average of 25.3 points per game. A lot of the struggles have come from quarterback play and Cam Newton has not looked like himself recently. Throwing four picks against the Buccaneers is unacceptable and Newton will really need to fix these mistakes if the Panthers are going to get out of this slump. On the other hand, the rushing offense for the Panthers has been stellar as they rank second in the league with 140.8 rushing yards per game.
Overall, the Panthers defense has not been great. They allow 25.5 points per game and 256.8 passing yards per game. However, when you look at their run defense it is an entirely different story. For the most part the rush defense for Carolina has been stout all year long. They are ranked 6th in the league in this category and allow only 96.2 yards per game.
For Carolina to snap their losing streak, they will need to play much better in the secondary. We all know Baker Mayfield has a cannon and if they let Mayfield sling the ball all over the field they will not be able to stop the Browns.
For most teams a record of 4-7-1 is not good at all, but for the Browns it is clearly showing that their has been improvement. Rookies, Baker Mayfield and Nick Chubb have been a huge source of the Browns success and that only looks to continue as both players near the end of their first season. Mayfield did struggle against the Texans, throwing three interceptions, but now going up against a less talented secondary should allow him to have a better game.
As mentioned, Baker Mayfield and Nick Chubb are having very solid rookie seasons given the circumstances they were placed in. The Browns offense is middle of the pack in most categories, but could improve in the points per game category. They score just 22.2 points per game, which ranks 20th in the league. Look for Browns to throw the ball early on a Panthers secondary who has not played very well this year.
While the offense has had success this year, the defense still needs much improvement. They rank at the bottom of nearly every stat category. This week will be a chance to show improvement as they face a struggling Panthers team.
